Date of Passing: Sep 01, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCATHARINA VAN RYN 1927 - 2018 Our mother, Catharina (Cathy) died suddenly on Saturday, September 1, after a life well-lived. Cathy was born in The Hague, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with our father Martin in 1957. After some initial struggles with homesickness, our mother settled happily into Canada and soon became a very proud Canadian. She and our father worked hard to provide security and comfort for their four children and somehow managed to launch us all successfully. Cathy was employed by the St. Amant Centre as a nurse's aid for over 20 years. She loved her work with the children there and fondly remembered many individuals she cared for even after she was beset by Dementia. It was at St. Amant that our mom learned to speak English and it was English that, soon after, became her first language. Mom was predeceased by our father, Martin and leaves her four children to cherish her memory: Irene (Bob) Bilan, Martin Van Ryn, Harry (Gail) Van Ryn and Darlene (Mike) Lamontagne. Mom will also be missed by her grandchildren, Chantal and Danielle L'Heureux and Martin and Alexandra Van Ryn. Mom was predeceased by her brother Leo and sisters, Trudy and Thea. She is survived by her sisters, Helen Van de Vorst and Gerry (George) Van der Zalm; and her brothers, Fred and Bill Wieffering. She will also be missed by her best friend Elizabeth Van Rooy. The family expresses their sincere thanks to the kind staff of Beethoven House, Riverwood Square and to Dr. M. Cummings for almost 30 years of medical care. A private service to celebrate our mother was held. Those who so wish may make a contribution to a charity of their choice in Cathy's memory. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Cathy was our dear neighbor for a very long time. We purchased the lot for our home from Cathy and Martin, for which we are forever grateful. We have missed her as our neighbor and thought very highly of her. Our deepest condolences go out to all her family. Jim and Pat - Posted by: Jim and Pat Pachol (Former neighbours) on: Sep 19, 2018

Mrs Van Ryn is an unforgettable character in my childhood development. I met her one day in Grade II, when I and her daughter, Irene, discovered that we lived near each other and she offered me a ride home from school, her Dad driving us home. Before dropping me off Martin checked in at home. We went into the house and an explosion of (what seemed to me at the age of 8) shouting in a loud a foreign language; conversation ensued headed by this extremely tall woman. Nobody ever yelled in my house- I was terrified and thrilled. This was my first experience shattering my idea of "normal" family life. I loved them. I was scared of Mrs. Van Ryn, but she had to be OK, she was my best friends mother. She always treated me with respect and kindness over those years in grade school . Irene was our maid of honorary at our wedding years later. We went to the airport to see Mr. and Mrs. Van Ryn off on one of their trips to Holland and stood outside on the observation deck a new experience: I was present at that same homecoming when during unpacking those "foreign " goods she brought home; grabbed a smoked eel from a paper bag, held it to her nose, and sniffed long while smiling ad shouting with joy. I was horrified anyone would actually eat something like that. The Van Ryns later moved on our street and their home became my second home. The two pesky brothers always present bothering their big sister. One day I saw a little miracle; that was when the baby arrived. Such a gorgeous blonde, blue-eyed little bundle entered the already cramped house. I moved away over 40 ish years from Winnipeg, and periodically visited her; bringing my picture books to show off our family and to have coffee, mmm, that delicious Dutch coffee and cookies. We traded family news and spoke of the past. She was a woman I respected and until today realize her part in my early widening development. Goodbye sweet Mrs. Van Ryn! You lived a full life and Canada is better for your family's presence in Canada. And thank you for accepting me into your family. - Posted by: Carol Van Tighem (Rebizant) (Friend) on: Sep 11, 2018
