ANDREW HAROLD BIRCH On Monday September 10, 2018 Andy passed away peacefully at home at the age of 55. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacqueline and Dennis as well as his brother Dave. He was also predeceased by his best friend, Duke his dog. Growing up in Fort Garry Andy quickly developed a love for sports which continued throughout his life. If there was a sport to play, he played it. His talent was exceptional. He received an Athlete of the Year Award at Vincent Massey in grade 11 which normally went to a grade 12 athlete. His baseball, hockey, football, and track skills carried over later in life to racquetball, golf, darts and squash in which he was provincially ranked. Birchy (as known to his friends) spent 20 years working at the Manitoba Liquor Commission through which he developed the skills and knowledge to become a power engineer. After leaving the MLCC, he established himself as a skilled contractor. He took great pride in his work as evidenced by the many renovation projects he completed. Andy had the gift of gab and was never afraid to share his opinion and engage in lively debate over the latest health trend, sports match, investment opportunity - pretty much any topic was fair game. Birchy had a huge heart and an immense love of life, gardening and animals. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 17, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm at the Eagle's Club, 3459 Pembina Hwy. We would like to thank the oncology department at the Victoria General Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Andy's memory to Cancer Care Manitoba. • Andy was a supremely talented athelete. He could twirl a basketball on the tip of his finger AND ride his bike at the same time! He was both quiet and boisterous. He was intelligent and cool. I wish we had stayed friends. Hind sight is 20/20. R.I.P. - Posted by: Sheri Arnason (Childhood friend.) on: Apr 04, 2019

  • It was a very sad day for me after I read of Andy's passing on Saturday. But on Sunday and today I have spent time remembering of our time together in high school and after. I was in grade twelve and he was in grade 10 when we first met. He was this boy in a man's body with all the athletic ability that would prove to shine and excel throughout his life. But what I will always remember about Andy will be his infectious smile and the laughter. What touches me the most is how he always respected and treated me as his mentor in sports. Part of me thinks that was his prank on me. Today is a good day for me to remember Andy all the memories I will have of him. To Andy, you never beat the older guy one on one. Thanks. - Posted by: Russ Rankin (High School Friend) on: Sep 17, 2018

  • Sad to hear of Andy's passing. Went to high school with both Andy and his brother Dave. Played hockey with Andy on the Twins. He was my center man throughout our time there. An absolute skilled athlete and very fun person to be around. Had not seen him in years and then one day in Safeway some guy smoked me with a hip check from behind into the vegetable counter; veggies were everywhere. Turned around to a laughing Andy Birch! Sorry Nels-he said and we both burst out in laughter! How the heck are you! Very fond memories of him. Taken from us way too early. Rest in peace buddy. - Posted by: John Nelson (Friend) on: Sep 17, 2018
