ROBERT (BOB) WAZNY
Born: Dec 17, 1938
Date of Passing: Sep 25, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT (BOB) WAZNY December 17, 1938 - September 25, 2018 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our Bob after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bob fought his illness with dignity, bravery, and a smile on his face. His favourite phrase throughout this difficult time became "it is what it is." Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Joan, his daughters, Sherri and Shannon, his grandchildren, Mandy, Jesse and Alex, his brother Dennis (Vera), his stepsister Joyce (Don), and many other close family members and wonderful friends. Bob was born and raised in Melrose, Manitoba. At the age of nine he moved to the North End of Winnipeg with his family. Upon graduating from St. John's High School, he started a five year apprenticeship as a Carman with C.N. Rail. At the completion of the apprenticeship he made the decision to explore other career options, which led him to join the Winnipeg Fire Department, where he stayed for the next 35 years. He greatly enjoyed his job, and especially the comradery and fellowship within his Fire Fighter family. He retired due to health issues in 1994 with the rank of Captain. Bob was a very active person throughout his life. He was a runner, swimmer, tennis player, cyclist, bowler, and golfer. He curled for 35 years at the same club. He tried it all and loved it all. Gardening was also one of his passions and he looked forward to his spring planting each and every year. While spending winters in Palm Springs, he became an excellent shuffleboard player. He won the Tournament of Champions in 2013 and was so proud of his American Eagle trophy. Being able to spend 20 winters in Palm Springs with Joan was wonderful, and they made many new friends there that keep in touch to this day. Bob and Joan travelled all over the world over the years. One of the most memorable trips was a month-long Mediterranean cruise in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. Summers, of course, meant Grand Beach. Bob fixed up the first family cottage, but the one that now stands in its place was built by him. Over 40 summers were spent at the cottage with their children and grandchildren, and it was a proud moment when Bob and Joan were named Legends of Grand Beach. Bob could never bring himself to sell the cabin and he was so glad that the family will continue to enjoy it for years to come. Heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care team, especially Tamara and Angela. We could not have made it through this time without your help and compassion. A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to the Manitoba Fire Fighters Burn Fund, P.O. Box 45001, R.P.O. Kildonan Place, Winnipeg, MB R2C 5C7. Rest in Peace Bob, Dad, Poppa. We will miss you terribly. We love you. Joan and family, we are so sorry to hear about Bob. What a kind, gentle man, always willing to lend a hand and a smile on his face. We remember those summers when your small grandchildren spent the summers with you and Bob, and never once did Bob look like he couldn't keep up with the little ones, painting bikes, packing for the beach, or just spending time with them all in his wonderful Grandpa way..I'm sure he will be very missed...our thoughts are with you all. - Posted by: Lauran &Ken Nimchuk (Friend from Grand Beach) on: Sep 29, 2018

Our sympathy on your loss Joan and family. We have lost a very gentle man, a true friend always there for others, a great husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed terribly but never forgotten, we will laugh and will cry but he will always be in our hearts. It was honour to be his friend.
