He was predeceased by his daughter Janice; parents, Parry and Peggy; sister Sherlee LePage; sister-in-law Helen Willms; brothers-in-law, John Peters, Henry Willms, Henry Penner and Rudy Willms. Mel lived a long and an enjoyable life reaching most of the goals he had set for himself. He was active in business most notably for operating the Paddock Restaurant for 33 years. He was also president of the Manitoba Restaurant Association. In earlier years, he was active in the Masonic Circle including serving as Grand First Principal of the Royal Arch Masons of Manitoba. He was a charter member and longtime rider of the Khartum Motor Patrol of the Shrine. Mel and Helen met at the University of Manitoba in 1946 and have been together since, recently celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary. They enjoyed many years at their cottage in Gimli, where friends and family were welcomed with "always good food", their favourite beverage and stimulating conversations. Summers were also spent sailing and cheering for his much loved Blue Bombers. In the fall, he looked forward to his annual hunting trips and playing squash. In retirement, Mel and Helen spent many wonderful winters in Florida, where they became avid tennis players and developed a network of close friends. For the past four years, Mel has been a resident of Riverview Health Centre, where he looked forward to his nephew Parry LePage's frequent and entertaining visits. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview for their dedication and exceptional care, especially the team on CD-2 who treated him like family. Should friends desire, donations would be appreciated to Riverview Health Foundation (www.riverviewhealthcentre.com) preferably The Alzheimer's Centre of Excellence. At Mel's request, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Niawka Country Club on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. As red was Mel's favourite colour, feel free to wear a hint (or more). Mel touched the lives of many, many people and the family would love to hear any stories or memories you may wish to share by sending an email to FMOrestes@gmail.com. My mom Deanna managed the apartment building across the street and I would go to the Paddock to visit and get a sherbert ice cream. Mr Orestes was always nice to me. I enjoyed the fountain and throwing a penny to make a wish and the treasure box. I was so heart broken to see the Paddock torn down. Lots of good memories I will cherish forever. Rest in peace. You were a nice man and your family was very lucky to have you. Never forgotten. - Posted by: Parris Larose (Thompson) (Customer) on: Feb 21, 2019

The Family Of William Melville “Mel” Kilfoyle would like to offer our deepest condolences to Helen and all the family. My father Mel spent many lunch times at the restaurant reading his newspaper and enjoying the food. As a child I still remember being able to pick a toy from the toy box. My sisters wedding reception was held upstairs at the restaurant. The Orestes family are an iconic restaurant family in winnipeg and the Paddock restaurant will always be a significant memory for me and our family. Coincidentally I was reviewing some of our historical documents today and came across a picture of Mel with my mom and dad Mel and Margaret taken at the restaurant. - Posted by: Murray Kilfoyle (Our family were patrons of the Paddock Restaurant) on: Oct 08, 2018

For years, my brother Garnet and I parked at the Paddock when we went to the Bomber games. It was always great to run into Mel when we were there. Always had a smile for us. My condolences to the family. Neil Lyons Boise, Idaho - Posted by: Neil Lyon (Cousin) on: Sep 30, 2018
