RUTH ELAINE REID (nee WOOD) It is with immense sadness that the family of Ruth Reid of Selkirk, Manitoba, announce her passing on September 26, 2018 at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her parents, Wes and Esther Wood and her devoted husband of over 60 years, Dr. Ian Reid. Ruth will be dearly missed by her three children, Kim and wife Brenda Reid, Bruce and wife Liz Reid, Patty and husband Craig Birston, her six grandchildren, Adam, Taylor, Kelsey, Brody, Ali and Reid, and her great-granddaughter Addison, who she was lucky enough to meet for the first time shortly before her passing. She will also be greatly missed by her only sibling, sister Betty Brade. Ruth was born on September 3,1931 in Brandon, Manitoba. She moved to Homewood at the age of six where she spent her childhood. After attending the University of Manitoba and graduating with a degree in Home Economics in 1952, Ruth went onto work as a home economist at the School for the Mentally Challenged in Portage la Prairie. While at university she met Ian Reid, who she would eventually marry and spend the next 60+ years with. Ruth and Ian resided in Selkirk for most of their married lives, raising their family and participating actively in the community. Ruth was a longtime member of P.E.O. and was actively involved in the Selkirk United Church. Some will remember her beautiful alto voice in the church choir, of which she was an active member. Ruth was a gentle, caring soul who dedicated her life to raising her children and running the "Reid" household (no easy feat!) She was the back bone of the family and, despite her quiet nature, exhibited a strength and wisdom that was seldom noticed. She became lovingly known as the "den mother" to the numerous water skiers who took up residence in their home on the Red River throughout the summers. Although being immersed in a sporting family, it was her passion for music and painting that brought her great solace. Memories of her sitting at her beloved piano and singing all her favourite old classics will be forever cherished by those who were close to her. Her quiet strength and the grace in which she lived her life will be forever remembered by those whose lives she touched. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave. in Selkirk on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a contribution can be made to the Selkirk United Church or to the Selkirk and District Community Foundation. Condolences, pictures and videos may be left on Ruth's tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements
