DARWIN KUPSKAY It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Darwin Kupskay on September 30, 2018 at the age of 63. Darwin is survived by his loving wife Marlene; his daughters, Alyce (Nigel), Sara (David) and their mother Janie; his stepson Mark Ratajesak (Laurie); his grandchildren, Braxton and Kai, Emma, Grayson and Sawyer; his mother Stephanie; brother John (Terri), and sister Lori Summers; as well as many nieces and nephews. Darwin was predeceased by his brother-in-law Lance Summers, and his father John Kupskay. Darwin was born on July 4, 1955 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up with his two siblings in their childhood home on Bronx Avenue in East Kildonan and attended Prince Edward Elementary School, later attending Miles Mac Collegiate. Darwin was actively involved in the community spending most of his time at the YMCA where he made lifelong friends, playing water polo and volunteering with the YMCA Y's Men. After graduating high school Darwin continued his education at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Engineering specializing in Civil Engineering. Upon graduating in 1978 Darwin began working at Reid Crowther and Partners where he would later become a Partner. Darwin continued his engineering career by taking the position of Research and Standards Engineer at the City of Winnipeg. His final venture with the City was to bring an innovative Diamond Grinding project to Winnipeg and along with it came the love of his life, Marlene. Darwin continued to work with the project as a consultant under his company, Kupskay Consulting Inc. He would ultimately work for the rest of his career as a consultant with the majority of his time spent at City Mix Inc. Darwin and Marlene married on a beautiful snowy day in Winnipeg on February 7, 2015. Their most cherished times were spent at War Eagle Lake and at their house in Phoenix, Arizona entertaining family and friends. Darwin adored his daughters and never missed the chance to express how proud he was of them. Darwin always put others before himself. "Infinitely more important than sharing one's material wealth is sharing the wealth of ourselves, our time and energy, our passion and commitment, and, above all, our love" - William Simon. Darwin's legacy will continue to live on through everyone who was fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I am shocked and sad to hear about Darwin. We go way back, as being born and raised across the street from each other on the Bronx. Lots of memories with his brother and sister and all of my siblings and all our mutual friends in the neighborhood. Fishing trips with the boys and lots of Good times at the EKY and with the Y's men. - Posted by: Sid Ruta (Long time neighbor+ friend) on: Oct 09, 2018

  • I knew Darwin when he was the Research and Standards Engineer for the Public Works Department. As his assistant, I benefited from his expertise as he guided me into a very rewarding career in Research and Standards. I miss your expertise and your boldness in our work challenges. Thank-you for taking me on to teach me and guide me. Your attention to detail taught me what was required to do my job, and how to apply it for life! Most memorable was your accomplishment of building your road, yes, by hand, to your cottage. At the time you were building on your cottage on War Eagle Lake and we shared a common joy in our cottages. Darwin's love of War Eagle Lake was close to his cottage roots at LacLu . I met Marlene on the Brookside Blvd. concrete grinding job and knew that she was in good hands. All the best to you, Marlene. Goodbye Darwin, we will miss you. - Posted by: Murray (Bruce) Peters (Co-worker) on: Oct 06, 2018

  • Our most heartfelt condolences to Darwin's families and friends. Darwin and I spent a lot of time together throughout our adolescences after meeting at the 'Y' at a young age. From about age 15 on we had lots of fun, won a few games, got in some trouble but managed somehow to survive to adulthood. Carol and I moved to Regina in 1980 and even with frequent trips back lost touch with many of our early friends. I am sure Darwin continued impacting people with his friendship as he did with us during our early years. Carol and Dave Brown - Posted by: Carol and Dave Brown (Friends) on: Oct 04, 2018

  • Darwin used to work with my husband. This past summer, he came to our house for our Aidilfitri brunch. That was the first time I met him outside of work environment and found out that he has a very good sense of humor. I am glad to have the opportunity to know him. - Posted by: Firdaus Timyati (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2018

  • My sincerest condolences to Darwin's family - he was one of those people I didn't get to see often enough but anytime I was able to see him I left with a smile on my face. He was one of the good ones and will be missed by many. - Posted by: Marc Pittet (Friend and Colleague) on: Oct 03, 2018

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with Marlene, Lori, Stephie and all of Darwin’s family at this very sad time. We were shocked to hear the news of Darwin’s sudden passing but took some comfort knowing he lived his last day at his slice of “heaven on earth”. We all recall when Darwin introduced us to Marlene down at War Eagle Lake. We instantly took a shine to her, she fit right in and we could see that Darwin was smitten! The rest is history. Darwin loved his War Eagle cabin and was rightly proud of all his work, including that amazing road he built into his yard. It was a labor of love and engineered to a tee! Darwin was very talented and hard working and was always willing to lend a hand or give his professional advice. We enjoyed the several fun events that Darwin & Mar hosted for the lake neighbors over the years - not to mention Darwin’s August Long firework displays! He was our beaver dam patrol, he had the cleanest pontoon boat and the neatest wood pile on the lake - he was meticulous! We will miss seeing you out on the lake Darwin but we know you’ll be watching over us out there. Give us a sign when the dam has to be lowered! Rest In Peace. Heartfelt condolences from "The McElrea’s". - Posted by: The McElrea Family (Family friends) on: Oct 02, 2018

  • I knew Darwin as a extremely committed team player. I had the honor of working with him for approximately 3 years. He always made time to help you understand something you had difficulty figuring out yourself. You will be missed terribly, Darwin. - Posted by: Jason Vivier (Co-Worker) on: Oct 02, 2018

  • Darwin was like a second dad to me. He was full of life, wisdom and advice. I will miss him on both a personal and business level. He inspired me with his level of integrity, honesty and morals. Darwin always did the right thing no matter what. And always had time for anyone in need. Darwin was one of the good ones and I will miss him greatly although I will never forget him. • Darwin and I were friends for many years going back to his days at Reid Crowther. He was one of the poker group that has gotten together just about every 2 weeks for the past 40+ years. We will miss him always playing "the Game"! We know that he was a great father to his daughters and a loving husband to Marlene. We send them our heartfelt condolences for their loss.
