F. MELVIN ORESTES October 30, 1928 - September 22, 2018 Mel passed away peacefully on September 22, 2018. He is survived by his wife Helen; children, Laurel Hudson (Robert), Maggie Welton (Dan) and Perry (Tim Giguere); grandchildren, Kristen Hudson, Megan Hudson (Andrew Bramm) and Jon Hudson (Leslie); and great-grandson Jack Bramm. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Irene Peters, Louise Penner and Lorraine Willms; brother-in-law John LePage, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Janice, parents, Parry and Peggy, sister Sherlee LePage, sister-in-law, Helen Willms, and brothers-in-law, John Peters, Henry Willms, Henry Penner and Rudy Willms. Mel lived a long and an enjoyable life reaching most of the goals he had set for himself. He was active in business - most notably for operating the Paddock Restaurant for 33 years. He was also president of the Manitoba Restaurant Association. In earlier years, he was active in the Masonic Circle including serving as Grand First Principal of the Royal Arch Masons of Manitoba. He was a charter member and long-time rider of the Khartum Motor Patrol of the Shrine. Mel and Helen met at the University of Manitoba in 1946 and have been together since, recently celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary. They enjoyed many years at their cottage in Gimli where friends and family were welcomed with "always good food", their favourite beverage and stimulating conversations. Summers were also spent sailing and cheering for his much-loved Blue Bombers. In the fall, he looked forward to his annual hunting trips and playing squash. In retirement, Mel and Helen spent many wonderful winters in Florida, where they became avid tennis players and developed a network of close friends. For the past four years, Mel has been a resident of Riverview Health Centre, where he looked forward to his nephew Parry LePage's frequent and entertaining visits. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview for their dedication and exceptional care, especially the team on CD-2 who treated him like family. Should friends desire, donations to Riverview Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated, www.riverviewhealthcentre.com, preferably The Alzheimer's Centre of Excellence. At Mel's request, there will be no funeral service. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

I wish to pass along my condolences to the Orestes family on the loss of my Uncle Mel who was very dear to me. I will always remember him very fondly as a kind and generous man who was devoted to his wife and family and a successful restauranteur. My fondest memories were of him at the cottage, first at Winnipeg Beach and later Gimli. Our family spent a number of summers with the Orestes clan at Winnipeg Beach and I remember Sundays as a special day as Uncle Mel would arrive late on Saturday evening after working at the Paddock, but would always bring out some steaks from the restaurant which they aged themselves. These steaks would then be grilled for Sunday dinner. I know that he and Aunt Helen enjoyed their summers at the lake with their family. - Posted by: John Peters (Nephew) on: Oct 06, 2018
