WILLIAM (BILL) MOON DONG William "Bill" Moon Dong peacefully passed away on September 28, 2018, at the age of 82. He had battled cancer while faithfully visiting his wife at her nursing home every night for the last 11 years. Bill is survived by his wife Suzanna; children, Erasmus, Himalaya (Doris) and Melinda (Jonathan); and granddaughters, Carrington, Callista and Chloe Moon. Bill had a quiet yet storied journey to Canada that was not revealed until his final years thanks to research by Dr. Alison Marshall. He came as a paper son in 1951 to Esterhazy, SK and fended for himself as a teenager alone in this country. He still supported his family back in China even during these times. He eventually moved to Brandon, MB and then Winnipeg, MB where he worked at the New Canton Restaurant and met his future wife Suzanna there. He worked at the Beachcomber Restaurant and then spent many evenings working at the Shanghai Restaurant while running his own diner -Moon's Eating Place during the day. This sacrifice and tenacity laid the foundation for his children and grandchildren. Part of his story now resides in the Chinese immigration exhibit at the Canadian Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg and in the books 'The Way of the Bachelor' and 'Cultivating Connections' by Dr. Marshall. Bill was an avid music connoisseur of many genres and in his younger years was a great dancer. His passion for cooking resulted in his youth and adult life in the restaurant industry. It was quoted by many customers that he made the best chicken fried rice they ever had. We give sincere thanks to CancerCare Manitoba and the Concordia Hospital 3 East Care Team for the compassionate support given to Bill over this last year and in his final days. Viewing will be on Thursday, October 11, 2018 between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and a Tea reception will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Both events will be at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in honour of Bill (Moon) Dong to the Concordia Foundation Inc. Rest Well Dad NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I will always remember my friend Bill from the Shanghai. People would look when we received the gold table-cloth treatment and wonder why they didnt get one. We loved Bill and always left a 50 on the table for his exquisite service. We always shared a few laughs which made it not only a nite out but a very pleasurable experience. Rest In Peace my friend, your work is done. - Posted by: Linden Johnson (friend) on: May 17, 2020
