Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNANCY KATHLEEN TIDMARSH (nee YOUNG) June 19, 1929 - October 3, 2018 On October 3, Nancy Kathleen Tidmarsh passed away peacefully after a relatively short illness at the age of 89 years. Nancy was born in Folkstone, Kent, UK on June 19, 1929, the second child of Jack and Maud (Nelhams) Young. Nancy is survived by her husband Geoff. She was predeceased by her parents, older sister Phyllis Rose and younger brother Edward Charles. Nancy had eight nieces and nephews: Squibs, Lesley and the late David Goddard (the children of her sister), and Susan, Carol, Ann, Michael and Mark (the children of her brother). She is also survived by a further three generations of nieces and nephews. Nancy was a much loved aunt who will be so sadly missed. Just after the Second World War when she was still a teenager, she left home to become a student nurse at Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, where she qualified as a State Registered Nurse and State Certified Midwife. After her training she went home to nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital, becoming a nursing sister and later a district Nurse. Nancy followed her dream and left for Canada to work for the Victoria Order of Nurses in Sudbury, Ontario (1959 to 1962). From there Nancy had planned to head to Vancouver, but on the train ride she found a job posting leading her to a northern outpost in Big Trout Lake, where she met her future husband, Geoff. A short while later they travelled home to Folkstone to marry in May of 1963. For the next 17 years, Nancy and Geoff worked in Canada's North, including time in the high Arctic. In 1980, they moved to Winnipeg, where Nancy became active in the community, ran an English Bed and Breakfast for 10 years, and enjoyed the Winnipeg Symphony and Arts Community. She was a lifelong learner and avid reader, interested in both history and current events. Nancy, while not having children of her own, cared for many friends' families and, later in life, became a caring animal sitter. Over the years Nancy visited numerous interesting places but always looked forward to her trips back home to family in the UK. In recent years, Nancy and Geoff celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, at which time they were independent and self-sufficient in their own home, caring for each other. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (4588 Roblin Blvd.) with Monsignor Comeault officiating. There will be a private interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a contribution can be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Condolences, pictures and videos may be left on Nancy's tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

Dear Geoff; I decided today to look up old Big Trout Lake relationships on the internet and came across this. Nancy was a fine lady and is a great loss for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I often think of the Big Trout days and especially remember you arriving there as our manager with you're 400 lb (?) box of soapstone carvings that you, John McIntyre and I hauled up to the house. My back is still sore!!! Take care, my friend. Don - Posted by: Don Plemel (Friend) on: Nov 27, 2018

As my great Aunt and God Mother, I will miss Nancy so much. As a child I would always wait for the post man around my birthday for my card from Canada. Sometimes I would get a parcel such as the baseball catcher mask she sent me. I would take it to school when we played baseball my friends always thought it was cool to have back then. Then in 1978 myself my Sister Sally and our Mother Nancy’s niece Squibs ( Joan ) got to travel to Winnipeg for a month. I remember that trip as it was yesterday even though it was 40 years ago Even though Nancy has gone she will always be in my hearts and all her families heart even though we are sad we will always smile at the thoughts of her and the love she gave to everyone. Even though I was born in Wales ( uk ) and the many miles between here and Canada I always new she loved me Nancy you are free now fly high and glow bright in the night sky Love always Beau ( your God Son ) - Posted by: Beau Dibble (Great Nephew ( God Son )) on: Oct 07, 2018

We feel very privileged to have known Nancy in Winnipeg since the 1980s, and always appreciated her sincere interest in our lives and those of our children Ian and Paula, and our Grandchildren. It meant more than words can convey. We relocated to Eastern Ontario 12 years ago, and on our visits back home to Winnipeg Nancy & Geoff always had time for us to visit, Nancy was the consummate hostess, and a true Lady ( with the capital L) We will miss Nancy, as will all whose lives she touched.
