ROBERT CRAWFORD CHESNEY It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, uncle, grandpa and great-grandpa, Robert (Bob) Crawford Chesney, on September 28, 2018, at the age of 90. He is survived by his children, Shirley Rayner (Bill), Bob Chesney (Marylou), Sharon Bazin (Gerry); his grandchildren, Candace Prior, Jackie Bentham (Nick), Andrea Iverson (Cory), Nicole Pauls (Matt), Carolyn Bazin; and his great-grandsons, Aidan and Liam Iverson, Max and Owen Bentham, and Jonah Pauls. Bob was predeceased by his wife Margaret Chesney (Ward) and his sister Joan Wrigley. Dad was born in Winnipeg, September 11, 1928. He was the son of Irish immigrant parents, Anna Crawford and Robert John Chesney. Dad was raised in Winnipeg and developed his strong work ethic through working in his mother and father's grocery store that was located in Fort Garry. After a brief stint working in a logging camp in Ladysmith, BC on Vancouver Island, Dad joined Manitoba Hydro in 1948, where he had a long career, working 35 years. As a young journeyman lineman, he worked on the important project to electrify rural Manitoba. In 1952, he married Margaret Florence Ann Ward and together they had three children, all born in Dauphin, MB. Dad moved the family twice; to Gimli and then to Virden to take management positions with Hydro. Retirement was early at 55 and another move took them to Rock Lake, MB, where they built a home on the lake. He enjoyed many more years of working on his property, restoring vehicles, and having fun with his family at the lake. Dad always had a second job; that of a volunteer firefighter in all the communities that he lived; Dauphin, Gimli and Virden. He used his knowledge, experience and leadership abilities to help rebuild the fire departments in Gimli and Virden. Dad loved people and animals, and collected many friends throughout his life. He owned several Labrador retrievers, a few horses and even some cattle. He was an avid outdoorsman and liked living out in the country. When he was young, he spent many hours hunting, fishing and boating. Early vacations included many camping trips in the Riding Mountain National Park and later vacations took him and our mother to Ireland, England, and 10 years of winters spent in Texas. Because of our Dad's big heart and love of people, he will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. A private family service to celebrate Dad's life and memories was held Wednesday, October 3 at Thompson "In the Park" Funeral Home (1291 McGillivray Boulevard). A family interment will be arranged at a future time in Baldur, Manitoba. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • From the Wallace District Fire Department in Virden and Elkhorn, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of Bob. I was a rookie firefighter when Bob was the District Chief for WDFD. He was the driving force in amalgamating the Virden Fire Department and Elkhorn Fire Department in 1977 into what is now know as the Wallace District Fire Department. Bob was promoted to District Chief and was instrumental in the building of both fire stations. He coordinated the organization of WDFD and set us up to become a very proactive fire department. Thank you Bob for everything you did for WDFD and the citizens of this community. I last saw Bob in 2017 when he and Kit Bell, a former WDFD firefighter, stopped by the Virden station to say hi. His face lit up when he saw the station and trucks. You could see the pride in his face. Rest easy Chief Chesney. - Posted by: Brad Yochim (Friend and fellow Firefighter) on: Apr 02, 2019

  • I and my best friend, Edgar were delivery boys at Chesney’s Grocery and one day Bob came in with his latest car, likely 1948 or 9. His sister Joan is mentioned in the obit and who I remember well. Bob’s Mother was a sweetheart. We enjoyed our job at Chesney’s. Ken. - Posted by: Ken Godwin (friend) on: Feb 24, 2019

  • We want to pay tribute to Uncle Bob, through the years we were fortunate to be able to visit our Aunt, Uncle and cousins in the rural towns of Manitoba - Dauphin, Gimli and Virden. We loved spending time with Uncle Bob and his family and we experienced first hand his contribution to each of the communities he lived in. Uncle Bob always supported and improved the fabric of the community through his work with the respective fire departments and community activities. This was in addition to being a great father and working full time for Manitoba Hydro. We also enjoyed seeing his restoration work on the Model A car, firetrucks and other finds he owned. In the earlier years at the store he was a good brother to our Mom, supportive and encouraging during any of life's challenges. Our condolences to our cousins and families. • On behalf of the Dauphin Fire Department, I offer our condolences on the passing of Mr. CHESNEY. We are very proud of our rich history of our Department and although I did not personally know him, it is obvious that Mr. CHESNEY was a strong part of our history. Bob was a member of the Dauphin Fire Department from August 1953 until January 1965 and served as the Assistant Deputy Chief of DFD from October 1962 until he resigned from the Department. He dedicated many years of his life to protecting his friends, family, neighbors and the communities in which he lived after leaving Dauphin. (We do have a photo from our archives circa 1960 if you wish, is visible on our Facebook page Dauphin Fire Department) R.I.P. Fire Fighter CHESNEY. - Posted by: Cameron ABREY (Current Fire Chief of Dauphin Fire Department) on: Oct 09, 2018
