ELIZABETH MARIE (BETTY) MCLAUGHLIN 1940 - 2018 It is with great sadness that her family must advise that Betty McLaughlin passed on October 23, 2018, at St. Boniface Hospital, aged 78, following a long and fierce battle with cancer. Betty was predeceased by her husband J. Allan McLaughlin, in March, 2018; her parents, Harry and Anne Wusaty; in-laws, Edward and Hilda McLaughlin, George, Bob (Donna) and Edward (Arlene). She is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Newton), Maureen (Boyd) and beloved grandsons, Mitchell, William and Connor Brearley; her sisters and brother, Jean (Edward) Rybak, George (Linda) Wusaty and Darlene (John Downing); brother-in-law Garry McLaughlin; nieces and nephews, Michael, Greg, Melissa, Cindy, Tracy, Darrel, Rob, Ron and Scott, and their extended families. Betty was born on the family homestead near Libau and the log house of her early childhood was shared with her grandparents, parents, sister, brother and cousin Alex. Life on the farm in the war years was not easy, but Betty recalled them as happy times and often looked back in wonder at the amount of work her parents did on and off the farm. Sundays were spent attending services at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Poplar Park, and there were family picnics, softball, curling, and special holiday dinners at her grandparents' farm in Walkleyburg. Betty went to Poplar Park and Libau schools, and excelled at English, History and Art. Before her 16th birthday she left for Winnipeg to attend Success Business School. She began her career at J.H. Ashdown & Sons Hardware, in the credit and billing offices. She was later employed as an executive secretary at Investors Syndicate. Betty's interest in fashion took her back into the workforce in 1980, beginning a 34-year career with Reitmans as a Sales Associate, and attained the position of 3rd Key. She always looked forward to helping her returning clients find the right look for the right occasion. Betty met her husband Allan at a dance at St. Nick's Hall, and they were together for nearly 60 years. They married in 1963 and spent their early married life in Elmwood, eventually moving to Transcona where they resided for the rest of their lives. Together they enjoyed the many events organized by the CP Rail Supervisors Club, including bowling and curling together. As a family they attended Transcona Memorial United Church, and Betty volunteered with Maple Leaf Community Centre, Girl Guide and school activities. In recent years, Betty became an Associate Member of Elmwood Legion. She and Allan enjoyed their Saturday afternoons with their friends there. Together they worked in their garden and on their home. They were blessed with wonderful neighbours, and took great joy in watching their children and grandchildren thrive alongside their own. Betty and Allan took trips together by rail to the West Coast and California, and visited family in Alberta, Montana, New Jersey and Ontario. Betty's cancer journey began in 2016. It was a testament to her strong will to survive that she fought through her many treatments to remain in her home, even while caring for Allan as his own health faltered. She was very grateful for the care she received at every step. In particular, her family would like to thank her health care teams at CancerCare Concordia and St. Boniface clinics, and the St. Boniface and WRHA Palliative Care teams for their compassion in her final days. Her daughters are also grateful for the help of family, friends and neighbours who supported them through these difficult days. Betty was a woman of profound faith which sustained her. Her family would like to thank the Rev. Carol Fletcher for her home and hospital visits, and her ongoing friendship and support. Rev. Fletcher will officiate at a service in celebration of Betty's life on Monday, November 5, 10:30 a.m. at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Ave. W. The family asks that you consider making a donation in her memory to CancerCare Manitoba, the Transcona Memorial United Church Building Fund, or a charity of your choice. Vichnaya Pamyat.
