EVELYN KWASNITZA Peacefully, with her family at her side, Mom passed, away at age 77, on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Riverview Health Centre. Left to cherish Mom's memory are partner Tom Metcalfe; sons, Scott (Monica) and Garth; "third son" Geordie Cruickshank (Tara); granddaughters, Janna (Adam), Courtney (Matt) and Chloe; great-grandchildren, Harper Evelyn and Landon; sister Dorothy Bailey of Alliston, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by husband Garry Kwasnitza; parents, Albert and Agnes Briggs; sister Eileen Briggs; and brother Thomas Briggs. Mom was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 30 years. She was 19 years old when her teaching career began in April, 1960 with the Toronto Board of Education. She retired from Buchanan School in St. James-Assiniboia School Division in 1995. Teaching was one of Mom's true loves, where her caring personality made a difference in the lives of countless students. Mom believed that there was nothing like a good hug to lift the spirits of a young child. Travel was another of Mom's great passions. She liked visiting warm locales where she had a special gift for endearing herself to the locals, especially young children. Youngsters on Australia's Gold Coast could hardly wait for daily songs and stories from "Miss Evelyn". Mom enjoyed numerous trips with friends, where laughter and good times were in abundant supply. Mom's greatest joy in life was her family. She loved Christmas gatherings and enjoyed hearing about the exploits of her granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Mom's extensive photo album collection is testament to the many good times shared with family. Mom was a caring friend, role model, and mentor who was never afraid to dispense straight-talking advice. Mom was beloved for her generosity, unconditional love, and kind heart. Mom left us with a wealth of happy memories and will live forever in our hearts. She had a unique gift for making you feel like the most special person in her life. Mom, now that you're in God's hands, the pain is gone, and you can rest forever in peace with Dad and your beloved pets, Snoopy and Peanut. Special thanks to the staff of CancerCare Manitoba and Riverview Palliative Care - especially Dr. Ted St. Godard - for gracing Mom with a peaceful and dignified passing. Mom was "footloose and fancy free" until the end. As was Mom's wish, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so wish, contributions may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • We last dropped in to see Ev in July, 2016 and spent a lovely couple of hours chatting about old times. We were newlyweds and arrived from Toronto in August 1969. During our time in Winnipeg, Ev and Gary were always a welcoming couple and we enjoyed countless hours drinking coffee and watching hockey in their living room. I only learned of her passing today while looking up info to call her. For some reason I had been thinking of her lately and had wanted to touch base. Ev was always a warm, welcoming, person. I will miss her sunny laugh. Love to Scott and Garth. - Posted by: Brian and Janet Lovegrove (Friends, work mate of Gary at A.C. Nielsen 1969 to 1973) on: Sep 06, 2021

  • I met Mrs. Kwaznitsa in 1985 when I was lucky enough to enter her grade 1/2 class at Buchanan Elementary. I was even luckier to get her in grade 2 as well! She was and is my favourite teacher. She used to tell my Mom that I “held court” in class 😂. One time she noticed that I got new boots and another boy in class didn’t have any. She called Mom and asked her if she could have my old boots. She always noticed and she always cared. Throughout my years at Buchanan, she encouraged me to run for student council president and in junior high I came back to her for advice and to tell her about my problems. She always listened. Now I live in BC and I have kids of my own and now THEY sing the 3 Bears cha cha cha! Thank you Mrs. K. Say hi to my Mom for me 💛 - Posted by: Kristin Maier nee Castle (Student) on: Oct 31, 2018

  • Oh Garth, Tom and Scott...I pray God in heaven will give you the strength you need in the coming days...the fortitude to move forward...loving memories...of one of the sweetest, kindest, generous neighbors I have been graced to have in my life. So patient, so kind, so headstrong and strong willed. Someone I have been blessed to know, and share a very small portion of her time on this earth. My heart and my prayers are with you. Stay strong. And resolute...as she was in her lifetime. We feel your loss personally. - Posted by: Annette Trottier (Neighbor and loving friend) on: Oct 28, 2018
