LOIS MARGARET WALKER (nee SHIELDS) 1933 - 2018 Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lois Walker passed away at the age of 85 years on November 2, 2018. Lois was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was the only child of parents, Dorothy Bell and George Shields. She was predeceased by her husband Hugh. Lois devoted her endless energy and caring heart to Hugh and their children, Bert (Gale), Ken (Tammy) and Sandy (Rheal). Our mom was a positive influence in our lives, as well as her grandchildren: Colin, Ian (Kyla), Derek (Lindsay), David, Stephanie (David), Ken and Carmen (Jason). Lois adored spending time with her young great-grandchildren: Simon, Elijah, Julien and Elodie. Sadly mom did not meet her fifth great-grandchild who is due to arrive any day now. Lois grew up in North Kildonan and Charleswood attending the Chapman School and later, St. Mary's Academy. When Lois was a little girl, she started her lifelong love of animals with her Newfoundland dog "Chum". For family and friends, Lois was always their biggest champion. She supported and encouraged all of us to never give up on our dreams. Lois was very creative and loved to paint, creating artwork on canvas and stone. She shared her talents in paper tole, knitting, crocheting, and sewing with family and friends. Her beautiful voice accompanied songs she played on the piano and organ, and she knew the lyrics to an endless library of popular music. Mom and dad took the family on adventurous camping trips from Ontario to B.C. Later, tents turned into trailers and then a cottage, as they made lasting memories forged over bonfires and lakeshores in Grand Beach, Woodlands, Gimli and Sandy Hook. Later in life, mom and dad loved visiting family and friends across Canada and in Arizona, and vacationing in the Caribbean. Like our dad, mom believed in the value of volunteerism, serving her community through the Foresters, theatre, schools, and many other groups. When she was not creating newsletters, cueing actors off stage, knitting scarves and mitts for children, or helping out at fundraising and social events, she worked as a skilled typist and office administrator for many organizations including the University of Manitoba Department of Animal Science. Mom we will miss you deeply. We will forever hold you in our hearts to cherish your laughter, quick wit, beauty and unconditional love. A celebration of Lois' life will take place on Thursday, November 8 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home at 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lois' name to the Canadian Cancer Society.
