Dad was born on May 25, 1923 in St. Jean Baptiste, MB where he was raised on a farm. He attended White Haven School until grade 8 at which time he quit school to help his father with the farm. In the spring of 1941 the Fillion family purchased a farm in Routledge, MB and settled there for many years on three sections of land with a large herd of cattle. Dad's family attended church regularly in Oak Lake, MB and this is where he met the love of his life, Jeanne Vachon. On October 18, 1952 they were wed at St. Athanase Church in Oak Lake, MB. They settled on a farm located east of Virden, MB. After two years of scraping by, milking cows and selling cream, they were determined to expand to a more modern dairy farm, milking 60 cows and shipping milk. During this time, they were blessed with four daughters and one son. Many of our memories as a family include working outdoors, helping each other with the care of the animals and working on the land. Dad took great pride in maintaining the barn and the yard, and as a result of both Mom and Dad's hard work, they were awarded the Manitoba Beautification Trophy. In 1976 they sold the farm due to Dad's health and settled in Winnipeg. Dad found employment as a custodian at Royal School. From 2001 to 2016 Mom and Dad moved to East St. Paul, MB to be closer to their daughter Carol, son-in-law John and their grandchildren. Dad enjoyed yard work, feeding the birds, cheering on the Winnipeg Jets and enjoyed weekly dances at the 215 Legion. In January 2017 Mom and Dad moved to Cathedrale Manor where they have made many new friends. We learned many important values and lessons from Dad, especially how to pray and how important God is in our daily lives. In the last few years he showed us how important it is to love and care for those who are special to us. Rest easy, dear Dad; you're home now. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church, 778 Archibald St., Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday, November 14, 2018; Prayers and Eulogy at 10:00 a.m.; Mass at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of the following: Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2323 Yonge Street, Suite 800, Toronto, ON M4P 2C9; Juvenile Diabetes, 1000-191 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X1; Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R3P 2T5; or Alzheimer Society of Canada, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
