Dorothy is survived by her son Iain, daughter Una and her husband Nick Shworak, and her cherished granddaughters, Jocelyn and Alexandra. Also surviving is her sister Caroline Inglis, nephew Charlie Inglis (Jan), niece Dorothy Parker, and sister-in-law Mary Zarie. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Hugh in January, 2000. Dorothy was born in Honeysuckle Cottage at Nine Mile Burn, Scotland, on October 13, 1925, younger daughter of Charles and Charlotte Ferguson. Dorothy earned her General Teaching Certificate at the Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh in 1945. In 1951 she set out on a new adventure and came to Winnipeg as an exchange teacher for a year. She went home to Scotland after her exchange year only to return to Canada a year later to take on the role of Grade One teacher in Flin Flon, Manitoba. It was in Flin Flon that Dorothy met Hugh, another new Scottish immigrant. They married in 1954 in Winnipeg and welcomed son Iain in 1955. In 1958 the family moved from Flin Flon to Brandon, Manitoba and welcomed daughter Una. In 1970 the family moved to Winnipeg. Dorothy taught Kindergarten in Brandon and Winnipeg, retiring from Mulvey School in 1986. Dorothy enjoyed knitting and baking, and with Hugh by her side entertaining friends and family in their St. James home. Special thanks to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for six years of tender, loving care and to the kind people at The High Tea Bakery who always made Dorothy feel like a special guest. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Westwood Presbyterian Church on the corner of Westwood and Browning, the Reverend Peter Bush officiating. It was with sadness that I read today of Dorothy's passing. My husband Phil and I were friends with Dorothy and Hugh for many years. My first taste of haggis was at a dinner in their home. My deepest sympathy to Iain, Una and Nick, and granddaughters Jocelyn and Alexandra. Audrey Henshall (friend) - Posted by: Audrey Henshall (Friend) on: Dec 08, 2018

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your mother. I taught with your mom at Mulvey from 1973-76. I remember her as a kindly lady. She often drove me back into St. James after the school day. I am sorry I am unable to be there on Friday but I will be thinking of you. - Posted by: Barbara Lindquist (Friend) on: Nov 14, 2018

It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Dorothy. She was an amazing person, a loving wife, a caring mother and a great friend. She was always happy to see us when we came to visit her. She knew my family from their days in Brandon, and regularly asked about how everyone was doing. She retained her lovely Scottish accent throughout her life, and it was always a pleasant experience listening to her speak. Heaven has gained another angel. Rest peacefully Dorothy. - Irma and Jody Morgan - Posted by: Irma and Jody Morgan (Family friend) on: Nov 14, 2018
