Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPHYLLIS MAE (FLETCHER) HORNBECK December 9, 1922 - November 23, 2018 Phyllis passed away peacefully, in her sleep, at Kin Place Personal Care Home, with her family at her side. She will be greatly missed by her three children, Gordon (Dale), Zoe (Brian) Thompson and Garry (Leslie), eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Phyllis has many nieces and nephews who call her "favourite aunt." Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Hilda (Spinks) Fletcher and Albert Fletcher, her brother Gordon Fletcher and his wife Tat, and brother-in-law Glen Anderson. She will be sadly missed by her sister Rita Anderson of Calgary, Alberta. Phyllis was born and raised in Toronto where she obtained her education and worked at Eaton's Department Store as a professional shopper. Phyllis met Hewitt Hornbeck, the love of her life, after the war at a veterans dance. After Hugh graduated from the College of Optometry they married on June 28, 1947 and moved to Winnipeg with their first child to begin their new life and new practice in rural Manitoba. They arrived in Swan River in 1950 where they raised their family. They started the first optometric practice in town and made an impact on the community from 1950 to 1987 when Hugh retired. Both were active in building the community. Phyllis was an artistic and musical person. She was honoured for her detailed and prolific fancy work, the main subject being wildlife. She loved music and played the piano and organ passing on her passion and skills to all her children. She was an active member of the Eastern Star holding many offices. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren showering them with handknit sweaters, blankets, toques, scarves and mitts in the current styles. She never forgot you on your birthday or other special occasions. She loved Christmas; all the decorating, cooking, shopping, wrapping and waiting for everyone to come home. Her "turk" would never be outdone. Every piece of tinsel was placed on her fabulous tree with care. After Hugh's death she sold the family home of 50 years and moved to Cooks Creek where she started a new life getting involved in the community and with new friends. She was invited to join the Knit Wits, a knitting group that prepared incredible items from donated wool for people in need, seniors homes, and hospitals. She loved the Cooks Creek Pancake Breakfasts, meeting Greta there, and was so impressed with the hard work of members there she became a major donor to their Expansion Project. Everyone loved her. The family would like to thank the staff at Springfield Place and Kin Place of Oakbank for their caring and friendships. Much thanks to Holly Charney Fjeldsted of Seasons Funeral Home for her generous assistance and professionalism. A Celebration of Life will take place at Seasons Funeral Chapel, Balsam Crescent, Oakbank, Manitoba on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. There will be a luncheon after the service. The family will take Phyllis to Victoria Cemetery to be buried alongside her husband of 63 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cooks Creek Community Centre Expansion Project, the Swan River Foundation, or a charity of choice. Condolences may be left at seasonsfunerals.ca
