CHRISTINA MABEL MARY SMITH (nee LAING) 1927 - 2018 Peacefully, on November 27, Chris passed away at home with her daughter by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Doug, who thought the world of her. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, James Smith (Debbie) and Pam Smith (Rick Literovich); as well as her two grandsons, Matthew and Ian Literovich, who owe a debt of gratitude and appreciation to their Grandma for everything she taught them. Chris was her family's biggest fan, loving to talk about their accomplishments. She was born and raised in Winnipeg, living in East Kildonan for most of her adult life until moving to Riverwood Square in 2011. She worked for 30 years as a teacher, establishing one of the first private kindergartens in the 1960's, before kindergarten was part of the school system. She then taught for many years at Neil Campbell and Emerson schools until she retired in 1987 to take up her next career, becoming Matthew and Ian's caregiver, guide and tutor, giving them an amazing start in life. Even after moving to Fort Garry, her membership at Immanuel United Church in East Kildonan was very important to her and she continued to attend for as long as possible, before the wonderful people of the congregation took it upon themselves to visit her at home instead of seeing her every Sunday in her regular seat. Chris was truly a "people person", making friends everywhere she went because she was always interested in hearing about other people's lives. She loved living at Riverwood Square and was very clear about never wanting to move to a personal care home. That wish was fulfilled due to the commitment of her wonderful aides, first through Friendly Caregivers, then privately, who went far above and beyond their job descriptions to take care of Chris at home. Most importantly though, Chris' beloved Rosie (Rosita Habig) devoted every spare moment to Chris' care and made her last months so much better. Rosie really became an important part of Chris' family. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie St., with Reverend Ha Na Park officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Immanuel United Church. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Sincere condolences to the family of Chris Smith. I taught at the same school as Chris for eight years. I was the teacher-librarian at Emerson School and Chris had such a knowledge and passion for books for young readers. We had many discussions over favourite stories and how to use them as "teaching moments." When my mother died , and later my husband, I received the most beautiful sympathy cards and handwritten notes of comfort and understanding. She always reached out and connected to many people in many different gestures of kindness. She will be remembered ,not only by her family, but by all those whose lives she touched . I know ,you ,her family, will have many wonderful memories to share over the coming years. Respectfully, Shirley Augustine - Posted by: Shirley Augustine (Former colleague.) on: Dec 07, 2018

  • Mrs Smith was literally the first teacher I had. She was an amazing woman. I was privileged to attend her retirement party. She meant a lot to our family. - Posted by: Karen Zapisocki (Student ) on: Dec 02, 2018

  • I met Chris many years ago through my friendship with her daughter Pam. Pam is my Winnipeg mom and Chris gladly took on the role of Winnipeg grandmother. She had a zest for life, her church, football, politics, people and her grandsons most of all! We used to have wonderfully gossipy girly lunches and she tried to teach me gin. This wonderful lady will be missed every day. Enjoy organizing the other angels to watch the Bombers games in heaven Chris. I will eat a box of Pot of Gold in your honour this Christmas. ❤️ - Posted by: Jody (Friend) on: Dec 01, 2018
