GARRY ERICKSON July 7, 1948 - December 10, 2018 Garry passed away peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre, after a six year struggle with dementia. He is survived by his wife Linda of 37 years, three brothers, one sister, five nephews and two nieces. Garry worked most of his life for the city of Winnipeg in various departments retiring from Forestry in 2009. Garry's biggest passion was bagpipes, learning at an early age, he was in many bands winning many of the medals in competitions. Through bagpipes he met his longtime friend of over 50 years Doug Brown. They enjoyed piping together and golfing throughout the years. Garry and Linda also enjoyed travelling. They took two bus tours to Europe, drove coast to coast in Canada and throughout most of the United States. I would like to thank Lindsay Bacala from the Deer Lodge Centre and all the staff from T3 and T4 for their wonderful care they gave Garry in the past two years. You are at peace now my baby, may you be smiling down on us. Love Forever Linda For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit www.chapellawn.ca Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I remember Uncle Garry fondly as part of my life growing up. He was kind and had such a great sense of humour, I can still hear his resonating, animated laugh that was contagious to anyone who heard it. I remember him as my favourite baby sitter to Brent and I, making the best, and creamiest Mac and Cheese and thoughtfully practicing his bagpipes in our basement in an attempt to dampen the sound (though anyone who has heard bagpipes in person knows playing discretely is impossible- but this didn’t stop Garry from trying). It was such a minuscule thing, but I remember feeling a particular kinship with Uncle Garry as when he knocked on the door for one of his visits, he’d always request an Earl Grey tea, which I had also discovered as my favourite afternoon drink when I was fairly young. I probably made it dreadfully sweet, or with too much milk, and I know I left the bag in too long on numerous occasions. But he would still smile brightly past his glasses and drink it politely just the same, and even if my parents had stepped out (who I knew were the chief reason for his visit) he was always present and engaged in our conversations as we waited. He never made me feel as if I was just a kid, pretending to be adult-like by sipping tea and having conversation with my uncle, he was kind, and thoughtful, and always interested in what I wanted to be, or what crazy subject I was enthralled in at the time. He always cared, and that’s what I remember most about him. I remember as well the relationship between Garry and my brother. He taught him everything he knew about golf, and they would go out frequently to enjoy the game together. With Garry’s passing, my brother has picked up golf clubs again and committed himself to the sport with more enthusiasm, and now, I think, purpose. It warms my heart to know that every time he picks up those clubs, or takes a swing, that a little bit of Garry’s gift to us is part of him. The gift of a truly caring, truly genuine, and truly missed Uncle. I love you Uncle Garry. - Posted by: Krissy (Niece) on: Dec 23, 2018
