ARTHUR GEORGE ELIAS (ART) It is with deep sadness that the family of Art Elias announce his passing on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Health Sciences Centre, with his family at his side. Art is survived by his son Colin and wife Darcie, his daughter-in-law Susan and her partner Chris Suchy, and Art's stepchildren Sherri Kinast (Gerald) and Kirsten Neil (Chuck Ibezimako). He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Katy, Taylor, Mackenzie, Ashton, Nicholas, and Ethan, and the many extended family members. He also leaves to mourn his passing, his brothers, Jack (Maria), Bob (Denise); his sister Carol (Bernard); his brothers-in-law, Ernie, Barrie, Len, and John, and sisters-in-law, Maureen, Ann and Lilian. Art was predeceased by his parents, George and Helen; his first wife Irene; his youngest son David; his sisters, Irene and Linda; his brother Jim; his sister-in-law Lynn; brother-in-law Toni; and most recently by his second loving wife Valerie. Born on January 28, 1946 in Winkler Manitoba. Art believed in hard work and continuous learning which proved to be the right formula for him to become very successful in the insurance industry. Early in his career, Art and his partners, John Dudek and Ed Lynch risked everything to buy a small brokerage firm which was the beginning to more hard work and learning. The path from that point forward was the establishment of one of the most successful brokerage firms in Manitoba. HED Insurance and Risk Services was founded in 1979. HED was named one of Manitoba's top 10 employers and one of Manitoba's top 50 fastest growing companies and twice shortlisted for the Canadian top 100 companies. HED was one of his passions but when he wasn't working, Art loved to read, curl and golf as much as he could during the summers in Winnipeg and the winter months in his favourite place, Palm Springs, California. So many people know of Art Elias, the President and CEO, but the other Art was the six foot five inch man who would instigate the rowdiness of his nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and grandchildren at the most inappropriate times and places. He had the most wonderful smile but behind that smile was a mischievous kid causing trouble when he could. Art bravely battled cancer for many years but the loss of Irene, David and then the most recent loss of Valerie took its toll and he just couldn't overcome the grief and at the age of 72 succumbed to it all. His legacy lives on through the love of his family, his generosity to many which included a variety of charities and his strong enduring spirit. An afternoon to remember Art took place at Niakwa Golf and Country Club on Thursday, December 20, 2018. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Colin, Sherri, Kirsten and extended family, Please accept my sincere sympathy in your Dad/Stepdad's passing. Even though Art and I were always separated by many miles most of the time, when we did get together in Gimli, Winnipeg, Rancho Mirage or Halfmoon Bay, I felt we had quality time together!! I will always remember how happy Art and Val were when I was in their company. And now they are together again!! Love you all, Uncle Len - Posted by: Len Pakulak (Brother-in-law) on: Dec 30, 2018

  • Art was a wonderful friend to me in our teenage years in school and in our first years in the insurance business. I recall his fun side however was most impressed by his ability to knuckle down to the job at hand taking on the biggest tasks and thinking his way to successful solutions. Art's size 12 shoes will be tough to fill. My deepest condolences to his family and many friends. Ken Kehler - Posted by: Kenneth Kehler (Friend) on: Dec 30, 2018
