Date of Passing: Dec 28, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN CHOBOTAR March 17, 1935 - December 28, 2018 Suddenly, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer, John Chobotar, 83, of Teulon, MB, passed away peacefully at the Gimli Hospital shortly after a visit from family. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Carole (Eliuk), his three sons, Al (Anne), Kenny (Teresa) and Kevin; grandchildren, Alexandra, Danielle (Jared), Mikal and Erik; brothers, Martin (Nell), Walter (Fran) and Bill (Janet); sister-in-law Darlene, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Dora, brother Alec, and sister Mary (Paul). Born in Sirko, Manitoba in 1935, John grew up on the family farm where he developed his love for cattle and making hay, which would never leave him. He also met Carole, the love of his life, there. They were married at the St. Elias Church on July 21, 1962. He began to pursue his teaching career at age 17 which led him to more than 24 schools throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. He finished his career in Teulon, retiring in 1995. His unique teaching style has had a continuing impact on many students and parents alike as shown by the outpouring of support from those who will never forget how "Mr. Chobotar" helped them along the way. John was never one to sit still. His favourite activities included listening to and playing music (polkas), being a Cantor at Church ("Vichnaya Pam'yat"), a member of the Kinsmen, helping farmers, socializing at auction sales, playing VLTs, and just cruising around the countryside. John had a love for sports. He excelled as both player and coach. He was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 as a member of the Vita Cubs. He also coached teams to League and Provincial Titles. His biggest passion, however, was spectating. Whether it was his sons, his grandchildren or even a local sports team, his voice was always heard through arenas and ball parks, trying to motivate players to do their best. Sometimes he could even be heard at home yelling at his Maple Leafs while watching Hockey Night In Canada. As per John's request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held at this time. The family is planning a Celebration of Life in early summer 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Teulon Health Care Foundation Inc. Thanks to family and friends for the many cards, care packages and kind words during this tough time. They are greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Dr. Majid Zahari, Dr. Jessica Chan and the hospital staffs at Stonewall, Gimli and Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion. Ken Loehmer Funeral Services 204-886-0404

Our deepest condolences to Carol and family. Johnny was my cousin and we were neighbours growing up in Sirko. I remember Johnny for his ever present laughter and wonderful sense of humour. Being a teacher myself, I know how his humour would permeate in his classroom. My oldest brother Bill and I last saw John in Sirko at the 100 Anniversary of the old Sirko church. We’ll miss him dearly. - Posted by: Alexander(Dennis) Chobotar (Cousin) on: Feb 05, 2019

To the Chobotar family, our condolences. John was larger than life with his presence, and his passion for all our sports! Whether in our early years playing ball when John and our dad Bill were coaching the age groups together, or following our hockey or soccer or whatever else it was, John always had advice and wanted everyone to do well. He was always full of energy and happy to start up a conversation whenever you’d run into him. And mom says she remembers how John was always well dressed! A great part of the community for so many years. We wish him peace. - Posted by: Al, Cindy, Joyce and Randy Babiuk (Friends) on: Jan 08, 2019

To the Chobotar Family, We are deeply saddened to hear of your loss. John was a mentor, teacher, coach and friend. He helped Lorne along the way when he first moved to Teulon in Grade 6, instantly encouraging Lorne into sports; something he will never forget! Even into the Senior Years with Teulon Tigers John was always on the sidelines, a voice well heard from the player's bench! John's love and energy for sports shone through his sons and grandchildren over the years. John & Carole visited with my parents, Bill & Winona sharing farming and auction stories over the years. Our thoughts are with you Carole, Al, Ken, Kevin and family. Hugs to you all Stay strong, cherish the memories and remember ~ ~ ~ Shoot the puck!!!! - Posted by: Lorne & Louise (Shupenia) Lavallee (Friend) on: Jan 06, 2019

Rest in Peace to the best teacher I had at Solway School, in Arbakka, MB. Always a kind soul, patient and dressed in his signature suit as a professional, he always was. I will always remember😢 - Posted by: Diane Morrisseau. (Chubey) (School student) on: Jan 04, 2019
