WALTER HULKEWYCH April 25, 1946 - January 8, 2019 Wally passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on January 8, 2019, at the age of 72, after a lengthy battle of cancer. Wally is survived by his loving wife Judy; his two daughters, Sharon (Tero) and Colleen; grandchildren, Erik and Evan; his sister Angela (Doug); brother-in-law Barry (Sue); Grant (Cindy); along with several nieces and nephews. Wally is predeceased by his parents, Jaroslaw and Lena; sister Laurisa; his parents-in-law, Stewart and Doreen; and nephew Shane. Wally was born on April 25, 1946 in Braunschweig, Germany. He arrived in Canada with his family in 1948 and grew up in the North End of Winnipeg. After attending St. John's High School, Wally enrolled in barber school in 1967, where he became a barber and opened his own salon, House of Class. This is where Wally hired Maylene who followed Wally for 34 years. Maylene became a third daughter to Wally and she held a special place in his heart. Wally's last place of employment was at Pall's Hairstyling where he enjoyed working with Bernie, Marcus and, of course, Maylene. Wally developed a very strong clientele who followed him for 50 years of his career. Many of his clients became dear friends to him. Wally thoroughly loved his job and never missed a day of work. Wally married Judy on September 7, 1968. They were married for 50 years and had two wonderful daughters. They enjoyed spending their summers at West Hawk Lake and Pye's Landing. Wally and Judy enjoyed travelling with Larry and Gerrie on many bus trips throughout Canada and the United States. Wally had a strong passion for motorcycles and purchased his first Harley Davidson which he was very proud of. He spent many evenings and weekends cruising the city with his buddies Bruce and Gord. Wally spent many years volunteering his time as a Shriner at the Shrine Circus. He was always very proud of his sales and was one of the top salesmen of balloons throughout his years of service. Wally was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2012. He courageously took 83 chemo treatments and spent many hours at Grace Hospital Cancer Care. He developed strong bonds with the all the staff there especially with his favourite nurse Rhonda. In October 2018, Wally was admitted into St. Boniface Hospital, where he received exceptional care from the staff. Wally had a short stay at Riverview where the staff were extremely compassionate and a special thank you to Jennifer and Alina for their care. The family wishes to thank Dr. Duane Hartley, Dr. Trevor Lee and Dr. Pat Harris for their exceptional care over the years. No service will be held as per Wally's wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba - Grace Hospital. The family would like to thank everyone who helped Wally through his illness. A special thank you to Charlie Swan for hand crafting the beautiful urn. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit www.chapellawn.ca Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 204-885-9715

  • It's hard to believe that it's 5 Years since you passed today . I miss my little family ! RIP Bro ! - Posted by: Angela Preston (Sister) on: Jan 08, 2024

  • I'm embarrassed to say I only recently discovered about Wally's passing. He was my barber for over 25 years, from when my wife and I moved to Winnipeg through to my retirement early in 2019, and he was truly a unique character and friend. He loved bragging about his loyal, high-profile customers, like Howard Pawley and Jim Downey, among others. He also loved complaining about MPI (where I worked for a while) and updating me on his computer games, motorcycle, daughters and grandsons, plus the bus trips with his wife. He shall be missed. - Posted by: Ted Wakefield (Client) on: Nov 25, 2019

  • I'm deeply saddened to hear the news of Wally's passing. I was a customer of Wally's for the past 5-6 years and like others, developed a close relationship with Wally. I looked forward to my appointments with Wally and enjoyed listening to the interesting stories from his adventures. Wally would always ask me about my life and never hesitated to give me advice on a given situation. Like many others I'm sure, we shared a special bond and I will cherish his friendship and memory. My condolences go out to the family. Your husband, father, grandfather was a special person, who will be missed. RIP Wally, you don't have to worry about those darn treatments anymore. -Lee - Posted by: Lee (Friend) on: Apr 25, 2019

  • I believe I might be the Rhonda mentioned in Walters’s obituary. I have retired after 35 years in healthcare and was overwhelmed with emotion to realize I made such an impact on his journey. Being recognized in this way has never happened to me before and I consider it a great honour and a highlight of my career. I remember Walter well and offer my condolences to those who loved him. - Rhonda - Posted by: Rhonda (Healthcare provider) on: Jan 26, 2019

  • Walter may have been a barber but he did much more than just cut hair. He shared his life with those who sat on his barber's chair either at Pall's or at Judy and his home. We will be hard pressed to find another barber who knew how to cut our hair and make us look sharp. We are glad he was a part of our lives. Sorry for your loss. • Wally was a unique individual - full of spirit and always in good humour. I have known Wally as a friend and as an excellent barber these past 30 years. We often met at Robin's to have a coffee and share our stories. My condolences to Judy and the rest of the family. We will miss him dearly. - Posted by: Victor Krenz (long time friend) on: Jan 21, 2019

  • Wally was my barber for more than 45 years. But he was so much more than that. He was a wonderful, friendly and compassionate human being, with a heart of gold. I always looked forward to our discussions whenever I saw him. I know how proud he was of his family, and how devoted he was to them. My condolences to his entire family. - Posted by: David Carrick (Client) on: Jan 19, 2019

  • Wally was my barber for over 12 years. More detailed and careful than any barber I've had in my almost 70 years. On top of that, Wally was a character. Full of life, fun and stories. I will really miss him. To Judy and family, my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Brad Mundy (Customer) on: Jan 15, 2019

  • I started going to Wally about five years ago. Wally was one of the best. He knew how to give a fellow a great brush cut, LOL. More then that, however, we became friends. In that friendship came a trust and Wally shared with me the ups and downs of his journey with cancer. We would laugh and sometimes share a tear which meant we'd have to stop cutting hair so he wouldn't screw up a good job. It was a couple of years ago that I gave him a T-shirt that read F U Cancer. I am saddened at the loss of a really great man and offer my condolences to his entire family. Based on the stories he shared, he was really proud of all of you. I will miss him a lot.
