VERN GLASS With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Vern Glass, beloved husband of Gerry, on January 9, 2019 at the age of 93 years. Vern was predeceased by his grandson Chris who he adored and will be sadly missed by his wife Gerry; son Eric (Cindy); granddaughter Jenna; son Bob (Trish); grandson Kyle (Melanie); great-grandson Oakley; grandson Troy; son Steve (Dawn); sister Vinie; a niece and numerous nephews. Vern had many talents and enjoyed many hobbies. He never recognized the word "can't" and felt he was able to accomplish most anything, and he was right! In his youth, Vern was a professional figure skater where he choreographed his own shows, as well as designed and built the sets and props. He left home in his late teens to become a licensed movie projectionist, working at theatres across southwestern Manitoba before joining CJAY TV as a camera man when the station launched in 1961. A year later, he began a wonderful career working at the CBC as a Coordinating Producer until his retirement in 1985. Vern built a cottage at Lake Metigoshe and spent many summers there enjoying building boats and the first water skis seen on the lake. Another wonderful past-time for Vern was spending time on his cabin cruiser with Gerry on Lake Winnipeg. This helped to nurture his talent for seeing the beauty in the many award winning photographs he took and proudly displayed. Vern communicated with people around the world on his ham radio under the call letters VE4RG, which he also used as the personalized license plate for his vehicles. In addition to all of this, Vern built and flew his own airplane. We all benefited from Vern's remarkable woodworking skills. And his amazing green thumb allowed him to make the most dismal looking plant flower with abundance, and that is how Vern lived his life. . . with abundance. A special thank you to all the staff on 4 North at the Grace Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Diabetes Canada, CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice. A come and go reception to celebrate Vern's life will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. There was a carload of figure skating students from Pipestone that would make the trip to Reston for our lessons. The influence that Vern Glass had on our lives lasted our lifetime. The costumes, the sets, the productions inspired us to try to teach and repeat his example in our future communities. Those memories of gliding on the ice in our beautiful costumes are very special. Thanks Vern, may your family have their special memories. - Posted by: Joyce Marsh (Nee Dodd’s figure skating student) on: Jan 22, 2019

Sympathies to you Gerry and your family on hearing of Vern's passing. Our thoughts go back to Reston days, the Reston Figure Skating Club of the 1950s, the performances in Reston, travels to other towns, the costumes, the building of the sets in the summer in the theatre. And, of course the Skating Reunion to mark Vern's 80th year here in Winnipeg, organized by Joanne, his skating partner. There have been many emails and photos from our archives being passed these last few days. We remember with fondness Vern's association with our parents (Lyall and Inez McMorran) in the McMorran Drug Store, his photos, and visiting 'up in the dark theatre projection room'. ...a caring person with many talents shared... Margaret, Clare and Janis McMorran. - Posted by: The McMorran family (Friends) on: Jan 17, 2019

Dear Geri, Our sincere condolences. You and Vern were mentors to many of us from Reston. Recently a photo of several of us was passed around from the production of Cinderella (circa 1957). Vern inspired us to do our personal best! Those skating lessons with Mr. Glass are talked about in many circles now around the globe, each time an Olympic skater takes the ice. Sincerely Julie Garlinghouse. - Posted by: Julie Haidish Garlinghouse (Figure Skating Student from Reston, Manitoba) on: Jan 16, 2019

Vern started to build his aircraft the year I started at CBC. We would save our Styrofoam coffee cups for him to use as glue containers during the building. I looked forward to seeing pictures of the process. He said it would take 5 years to build and he finished it in 5 years. I had the honour to fly with Vern in his Piel Emeraud during my one and only flying poker derby. I could go on and on about Vern's professionalism, patience and multiple skills in and out of "50 booth". A great guy. My sincere condolences. - Posted by: Murray Parker (colleague and friend) on: Jan 15, 2019
