Date of Passing: Jan 19, 2019
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN PHILIP WILLIAMS It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Philip Williams, on January 19, 2019, at the age of 89. John is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Williams; three daughters, Leslie O'Shaughnessy (Bob), Laurel Carpenter and Lynne Williams; five grandchildren, Jenna Ostrowerka (Thomas), David O'Shaughnessy, Michael Carpenter, Patrick O'Shaughnessy (Blakeley) and Ryan O'Shaughnessy; and great-granddaughter Audrey Ostrowerka. John is also survived by his nephew Ron Starosilec (Leslie) and three nieces, Janice Hodkinson (Larry), Shannon Forgie (Rob) and Allison Brule (Glenn). John was born in Winnipeg and spent his childhood years on Selkirk Avenue, west of McPhillips. John and Elaine met at Whytewold Beach in 1947, were married in 1952 and enjoyed 66 joyful years of marriage. They settled and raised their daughters in the community of East Kildonan. John worked for 33 years at Canadian Pacific Railway where he started as a pipefitter and retired as a supervisor. Throughout his life, Whytewold remained an important place and upon retirement John and Elaine moved there permanently. There are countless fond memories of times spent at Whytewold, as John and Elaine were often joined by their children, grandchildren and friends, especially during the summer months. John and Elaine also travelled extensively, wintering in Florida and Arizona, cruising, and most excitingly, visiting Italy, the homeland of John's father. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Sabina Williams; his sisters, Mary Starosilec and Marjorie Milord; and his dear nephew, Michael Starosilec. John went through life with an optimistic outlook and sense of humour that endeared him to all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff and residents of River Ridge Retirement Residence for helping make the last three years enjoyable, and to the Home Care and Palliative Care staff for their many kindnesses. They would also like to thank Ed Merriam and many other thoughtful friends. There will be a celebration of John's life on May 25, 2019 (John's 90th Birthday), at River Ridge Retirement Residence, 50 Ridgecrest Ave., Winnipeg, at 1:00 p.m. Condolences, pictures and videos may be left at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
