EVELYN FREEMAN 1927 - 2019 On January 22, 2019, Evelyn Freeman died peacefully in the Grace Hospital ICU unit, after a short illness. Evelyn is survived by her son Bruce (John), daughter Valerie (Stephen), grandchildren, Kaitlin (Neil), Megan and Robert, and great-granddaughter Olivia. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Evelyn married the love of her life, Oscar, in 1950. Soon after, the couple built their first and only home in Fort Garry and began raising their family. Next to Oscar, family and home were the other two great loves of Evelyn's life, and she lavished attention on both. During her life, she embraced her own Scottish background, and Oscar's Icelandic background. That meant deep involvement in Winnipeg's Highland Dance community, the early days of the Scottish Pavilion at Folklorama, and annual baking of shortbread and Vinarterta, two family favourites at Christmas. She was fond of saying that she would have to be carried out of her home and on December 30, 2018, she was. She lived 15 years after Oscar died, all but the last three weeks in the home they had built together. Heartfelt thanks to emergency and ICU staff at Grace Hospital, as well as those at Deer Lodge Geriatric Rehab, who provided care to Evelyn and support to family. As well, special thanks to close neighbours and friends, Frank and Florence Puskar, for the attention and care they provided over the years, for which Evelyn and her family were always grateful. The family will hold a private ceremony to honour Evelyn's life. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winnipeg Pet Rescue or Siloam Mission.
