DONOVAN ANDERSON MCCARTHY 1928 - 2019 Don McCarthy passed away quietly at Grace Hospital on February 28. Don was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. But for a brief three-year stint on the then unpaved streets of a new suburb called Fort Garry in the early 1950s, he lived in Tuxedo and River Heights his entire life. Don graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BA and from the School of Law. After practicing law upon graduation, he joined Prudential Life. He then spent most of his career as VP and Legal counsel at Monarch Life Assurance. Don was very engaged in his community and well beyond. He was an active participant and fund raiser to have the first of its kind indoor arena built at River Heights. He was one of the founding group that had the Winnipeg Squash Club built in its existing site, as well as being a ranked squash player for many years. He was part of the management group that raised the funds to keep the then, WHA Jets in Winnipeg, ultimately leading to Avco Cup championships and the signing of the first Swedish players in North American pro hockey. Don loved everything about golf. He worked on the grounds crew at St. Charles as a teenager. He would later become a very good player in his own right and was a member at Niakwa. He would later go back to his roots as a 43-year member of St. Charles. Don loved politics. He was an unabashed Conservative and worked campaigns Provincially and Federally with leaders like Duff Roblin, Bud Sherman, Sterling Lyon and Sidney Spivak. Premier Filman recognized his many accomplishments and appointed Don as Chairman of MPIC during his time in office. For all his accomplishments in business, sports and politics, Don was a man of faith. He attended Elim Chapel and Bethesda churches. He was most proud of a 50-year association with the Billy Graham organization and became the president of the Canadian organization. Don is survived by his wife Marian (Hull); sister Patricia Jacobs, of Greensboro, NC; a son Paul, of Bedford, NH; and grandchildren, Chris and Alexandra, of Charlotte, NC. A daughter Marcia passed away in May 2018. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., at Elim Chapel, 546 Portage Avenue. Special thank you to Dr. Al Schroeder for his enduring friendship and support. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • Don will always be “Mr. McCarthy” to me and many of my closest friends who grew up in River Heights. There are many great memories of Mr. McCarthy (and other parents) driving us around Winnipeg and parts of Manitoba to play hockey and football. A huge supporter of the River Heights Cardinals hockey teams, Mr. McCarthy was not only a proud fan but an accomplished participant in many sports. A man of great character, a good role model for us all. My first job out of university was a direct result of his advice and guidance. I will never forget the group of fathers that supported us for all those years (Mr. McCarthy, Taylor, Hedley, Kroft, Toshack, Appleby, Miles, Hodgson and others). Wishing the family all the best in celebrating the life of a great Canadian. Chris Hodgson Toronto. - Posted by: Christopher Hodgson (Family friend) on: Mar 07, 2019

  • It was a true honour to call Don McCarthy my friend, these past 20 years. I got to know Don as we served together on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for many years. I learned so much from Don; be it in life, spiritual topics, golf, politics and just being like a second father to me. Don truly was a "Man of Integrity " and exampled it in so many ways. He will be missed by many not only in Winnipeg but throughout Canada and the USA. I know Don's family are very proud of him. May God bless and comfort the McCarthy family. - Posted by: Don Neufeld (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2019

  • A true friend in the faith, I had the privilege of sharing years with Don on the board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. I always appreciated his wit and humour and his example of a true Christian man. May his family be comforted knowing that Don is now with his heavenly family. God be with you Marian and family. - Posted by: Dennis Glubish (Friend) on: Mar 05, 2019

  • Don was a friend of my parents, and through squash, golf, and St. Charles remained a friend of mine. He was a true gentleman, and I shall miss him a great deal. - Posted by: Tim Nosworthy (Friend) on: Mar 05, 2019
