PATRICIA (PATTI) JANE BONAS (PAISLEY)
Born: Aug 14, 1955
Date of Passing: Feb 28, 2019
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPATRICIA (PATTI) JANE BONAS (nee PAISLEY) August 14, 1955 - February 28, 2019 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Patricia Jane Bonas (nee Paisley). Patti will be greatly missed by many: Dieter, her beloved husband of 39 years, sister Jackie (Rick) MacKenzie, and brother Alan Paisley, nephew Jared, nieces, Carmin and Heather and their children, and the entire Bonas family whom she was very fond of. She was predeceased by her parents, Chris and Bert Paisley, and Andrew, a very special little boy. Full of life and personality she attracted people with her positive outlook on life. These traits served her well through many challenges including paralysis at 14 from a diving accident. While dramatically changing her life, she didn't let this stop or define her. Instead she has used her life experiences to help and inspire many. Patti was very articulate, and she touched many lives through her speaking of stories of perseverance and also what it's like to live with a spinal cord injury. She was fortunate to accumulate many friends along the way and we thank them for all their help and support over the years. In particular Patti was a treasured friend to her lifelong pals, Deb Carmichael, Trish Conroy and the 'St. James Gang'. They have always been there for her. As well she was cherished by her church families from St. Peter's Lutheran and Whyte Ridge Baptist Churches, and those who Patti had the privilege to work with over the years. Always willing to lead, she was school president at Hedges Junior High and loved her career at the University of Manitoba as Manager of the Reservations/Special Functions Department. Patti believed in giving back and so used her time and talents volunteering. She was active in a number of organizations including many years on the Board of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (SCI Manitoba Inc.), Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, and TenTen Sinclair Housing. She loved to travel and had many wonderful trips while growing up and with Dieter. As a Christian Patti shared her testimony "From Lemons to Lemonade" with many groups. She looked forward to the opportunity to ask God a number of questions she's accrued over her lifetime. Patti also looked forward to running together with Andrew. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the many medical staff that helped Patti throughout her life in dealing with her ailments. She fought a long battle for many years dealing with an ever-increasing number of health issues. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 4, at 11:00 a.m. to join the family in a celebration of Patti's life at Whyte Ridge Baptist Church, 2405 McGillivray Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity or the Canadian Paraplegic Association of Manitoba, 211, 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5. We will miss our dear Patti. Over the years we have socialized with Dieter and Patti over supper, games and other events and when we think of Patti we think of Dieter and when we think of Dieter we think of Patti. It is so hard to believe that she is gone. We will miss her everlasting smiles, wit and independence. I just can't imagine the pain Dieter feels as he had a very special relationship with a very special person. Deepest condolences to Dieter and his family. Patti was one of the sweetest and most honest people I knew in those early and impressionable years at Linwood School. I always loved being with her and admired the special friendships she had with people like Deb and Patricia and so many others that proved to last a lifetime. Years later we reunited at the #100 Linwood School reunion and it felt as if we’d never been apart- Patti’s beautiful smile and hug melted away the years and we were friends once again. I was overjoyed to learn her life had become so happy and incredibly purposeful despite her health challenges, which clearly didn’t impede her success one little bit. It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I think of her passing, knowing her husband Dieter and Patti’s closest friends have lost an incredible soul and spirit. Blessings on Patti and her family, friends and co-workers; I will never forget her and the inspired life she lived so well. - Posted by: Pauline James Curtis (Elementary school-mate and friend ) on: Apr 24, 2019

I knew Patty for many years. We grew up one block apart in St. James, and although she was a year older than me, she was friendly and kind. Years later, we became reacquainted when our paths crossed at the Rehab hospital where I worked; despite everything that Patty was going through, she always greeted me with a smile and a positive attitude. I was honoured to meet her husband Dieter at MTC on several occasions. It made me happy to know that she had such a genuinely nice, caring life-mate. My condolences to you, Dieter on your terrible loss. - Posted by: Linda Johnson (Acquaintance) on: Mar 18, 2019

Dieter, Lisa and I were very sorry to hear of your loss. Patti's smile and positive attitude were always an inspiration. She lit up the room at our many Ducks Unlimited parties over the years. We appreciated her genuine thoughtfulness as she asked and listened to others. Our sincerest sympathies are with you. - Posted by: Brian Kazmerik (Friend) on: Mar 13, 2019

Dieter the photo you posted of Patti is wonderful! It encapsulates in a picture all the attributes of enthusiasm, leadership, inquisitiveness and loving soul. It will be difficult for us to imagine she is gone but we can picture her dancing in heaven with no pain or wheelchairs to worry about. We feel blessed to have known Patti, she brightened and encouraged us through her strong will, deep faith and compassion for others. We will miss her and hope and pray God, friends and family continue to comfort you. - Posted by: Cameron and Valerie Buchanan (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2019

It is very hard to express my feelings on the passing of my dear friend Patti Bonas. I have known Patti over 55 years. At we were going to Linwood School, then Deer Lodge Junior High Granted we were not that close then but I do remember her and the same smile she had in later life started then. I then reconnected with Patti when I was informed she was married to another good friend of mine Dieter Bonas. I had met Dieter through the CPA Pool league. I then realized how God had made a perfect union by putting Patti & Dieter together. I had rarely seen a happier couple, or one who is better suited to be together. I am so happy that they considered me as a friend as well I am so blessed that Patti was in my life experience. And I am so sorry that my friend Dieter no longer has his life partner. If there is anything you need please let me know. - Posted by: Gordon Kerr (Long time friend) on: Mar 12, 2019

Patti was the first female tenant to live at Ten Ten Sinclair Housing Inc. She was at the ribbon cutting when Ten Ten opened in July of 1975, In 2015, I had the great pleasure of discussing the speech that Patti would give at Ten Ten's 40th anniversary. As I listened to her speech, I was honored to be in the presence of this amazing person who spoke so honestly about being a women with a physical disability. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to have met Patti and I have been inspired by her ever since. Thank you for sharing your time with me. RIP amazing Lady Debbie - Posted by: Debbie van Ettinger (Friend) on: Mar 11, 2019

I met both Patti and Dieter at the HSC Rehab Centre in 1977. And we've crossed paths many times since then. I always enjoyed running into Patti at UMSU at the U of M, where she worked many years with out mutual friend Natalie D. The life of a paraplegic can be trying, but I never saw Patti without her smile. Good-bye for now. - Posted by: Allen Lasko (fellow paraplegic) on: Mar 09, 2019
