CLARA WEITZEL Peacefully, in her daughter's arms, Clara Helen Ida Weitzel (nee Scholz) passed away on Friday, March 1, 2019 at River Park Gardens Personal Care Home. Clara was born on April 11, 1926 to Clara and Walter Scholz, the second of four children. Although born in Winnipeg, she spent the majority of her early years growing up in Langenburg, SK; then returning to the "big city" after high school graduation. Upon completion of a secretarial program at a Success Business College, Mom worked for John Inglis Company. It was in this time period that she met (by literally tripping over him at Luther League) and married the love of her life on February 28, 1949. Trips home to Langenburg were always very important to Mom. As kids, we vividly remember several trips there in inclement weather, as well as the magical trips out west at Christmas as the freezing cold frosted up the ol' Dodge's windows. Being pulled out of the ditch by a team of horses will forever be a cherished memory! Mom and Dad wintered in Mazatlan for over 30 years, as well as several trips to Europe and Hawaii. Mourning her loss are her three children, Rick and wife Jane, Brenda and husband Denis Monnier and Bradley and wife Paddy. Her grandchildren, Dean Weitzel, Todd and Drew Monnier (Ashley), Shannon Unrau and Chris Weitzel (Christy) are left with wonderful memories of their dear Nana, along with the great-grandchildren, Zoe Davis-Weitzel, Stella and Poppy Monnier, Ethan and Emma Unrau, and Aaron and Adam Weitzel. There is nothing she wouldn't have done for any one of us. She is also survived by her brother Walter (Reta) of Langenburg, SK, brother Herb (Arni) of Yorkton, SK, sister-in-law Marlene Swanson of Winnipeg, and many nieces, nephews and great friends. Sadly, she was predeceased by her beloved husband Harold, after 63 years of marriage in November 2012. Music was Mom's passion. She sang in the church choir and could always be found tinkling the piano keys. She was a master at canning and pickling. During the years they lived in St. Adolphe, Mom would be out in the garden as soon as the sun began to rise to beat the heat of the day. She always said this was the best time of the day. She invented St. Adolphe coffee! Eating was her favourite pastime; she never missed a meal. Mom loved to do crossword puzzles, play cards, read Danielle Steele books, watch game shows, and take pictures. She loved her four-legged animals almost as much as her kids! She was witty and had a great sense of humour. In November 1996, Mom suffered a severe stroke and wasn't expected to live, but she overcame. As the next 10 years went by, her health deteriorated, dementia was setting in, and the challenges our dad faced with Mom's care were too great for him to handle. In 2007, she moved into River Park Gardens Personal Care Home, where she gained a whole new family. All the staff at the home treated her with such genuine kindness and love, just like she was their own mom. You are all living angels. We will be forever grateful. As we mourn the loss of our mom, we must remember her good years and feel blessed to have had her in our lives for 92 years. She was a great role model and we are all better people because of her. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with Pastor Chris Bishopp officiating. If so desired, charitable donations can be made in Clara's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or to Faith Lutheran Church Memorial Fund (attn: Spiritual Care Program at RPG), 1311 Dakota St., Winnipeg, MB R2N 1V8. • I first met Clara when my mother (her aunt) brought my brother and me to visit our Grandmother and other family members in Langenburg in the summer of 1942. Clara and I became fast friends and stayed in contact for years afterward. Many fond memories are still with me from that time. It was a treasured time. - Posted by: Irene Jacobson (Cousin) on: Mar 09, 2019
