Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCLAUDE BERNIER On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, Claude Charles Bernier beloved husband, father, grandfather and adventurer, passed away at the age of 87. Claude was born on June 18, 1931 in St. Boniface, which was the playground of his youth. He studied at le Collège de Saint-Boniface and the University of Manitoba before completing his PhD in plant sciences at the University of Minnesota. He was a professor of plant pathology for 35 years in the department of Plant Sciences at the University of Manitoba. He received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba and Université de Saint-Boniface in recognition for his scientific contributions to the protection of agricultural crops against diseases. He was preceded in death by his wife, Réjane (née Leblanc); his parents, Madeleine and Raymond Bernier; and his brother Gilles. He is survived by his three children, Jacqueline (Gilbert Zolondek), Anne-Marie (Georges Gélinas) and François (Sandra Wolfe); his five loving grandchildren; his sister Claire Noël (Maurice); and his friend and companion Denise Fredette. Claude lived a full life fueled by his love of family, nature and the outdoors and science. He was known to many as Buckshot when, in his youth, he began exploring Manitoba's lakes and rivers by canoe, and where he camped and fished for the better part of his life. This passion for adventure led him to explore the world as a traveller, historian, scientist and photographer. His adventures took him to the Middle East, Africa and South America at a time when very few people travelled to these parts and as an avid photographer he loved to share his photos of his travels. He regaled us with his stories of exploring the Sudan in the 1970s, discovering the cities of Syria and Afghanistan, getting evacuated from Beirut as the war started, and of his fishing exploits, of course. He led a world-class research program, focused on improving crops in both Canada and across the world. A welcoming mentor, he helped train the next generation of scientists from Canada and from around the world. He took great pride in all his graduate students and their accomplishments. Réjane, his wife of 49 years, was his constant companion and together they raised three children, who share many of their passions. Quick-witted, even-tempered and soft-hearted, he touched the lives of so many. The funeral will be held at la Cathédrale de Saint-Boniface on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Donations may be made in Claude's memory to Le Centre Flavie-Laurent, 450 Provencher Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2J 0B9, a cause that was close to Claude's heart. Desjardins Funeral Home 204-233-4949
