BERTHA (AMMA) EMMA ALEXANDER (JOHNSON) (nee VANWALLEGHEM) At the age of 102, Mom's work was done and she passed away peacefully, with loving family by her side, on March 29, 2019 at Gimli and District Health Centre. Many thanks to Dr. Fulmore and the kind nursing and health care staff of Gimli. Mom was born in Darwin, MB on November 26, 1916 to Alfred and Charlotte vanWalleghem and was predeceased by her brothers, Eddy, George, Charlie and Henry, and her sisters, Anna Bjornson, Helen Museta and Dorothy Wareham. On October 29, 1934 Mom married Eliman Jonsson and moved to Arborg settling on Dad's family homestead of Fiskalaek, then to Arborg and the House of Hope. Dad predeceased Mom in 1952. They had eight children and Mom was predeceased by sons, Elmer, Kris and Henry, and daughters, Ella, Dorothy and Florence. Mom is survived by Joan Johnson and Janice Abuda (Bob), many grandchildren - who were very close to her, and many more great and great-great-grandchildren. Mom was a lady of grace and dignity, who displayed the best in manners and thankfulness of time spent with her. You always felt better after visiting her. Mom was an accomplished seamstress, she took on any needlework. She has made Icelandic sweaters, afghans, needlepoint, ceramics and crocheted many handicrafts which she shared with all of her family members. Her bountiful meals were always delicious, and she gave every family member a cookbook of family recipes including her favourites. Mom had a very witty sense of humour, even at the end she still had something funny to say and a little ditty to sing, even the day before she passed. Her favourite good bye saying was take care and don't take any wooden nickels. Mom was an excellent curler winning many trophies and curled into her 80s. She travelled all over Canada, going to both coasts, Hawaii and Mexico at 95. Mom was president of Arborg Seniors Club for many years. Mom loved to garden, and many family members have her yellow lilies. Interment will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at the Arborg Community Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at the Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church. Many thanks to Arborg homecare workers, and the angels that work at House of Hope. Mom we love you, and we will miss you.
