ALICE MARGARET MITCHELL
(nee TORPY)
July 2, 1920 - March 31, 2019
Alice was born in Alix, AB to Michael and Florence Torpy and was raised in Bashaw, AB, along with nine siblings.
Alice was predeceased by her husband Cliff, son Brent, and her nine siblings. She is survived by her son Blair (Teresa) of Belleville, ON, daughters, Maureen of Ottawa and Kathleen Rismondo (George) of Thunder Bay, ON; daughter-in-law Barb, and grandsons, Brad and Brock of Langdon, AB, granddaughter Livia Rismondo (Royce) of Margaret River, Australia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marlene and Gerry Tyler of Woodbury, MN. Also left to mourn are numerous nieces and nephews.
Alice joined the R.C.A.F. and served overseas from 1941 to 1945. After the war, while still stationed in England, she was fortunate enough to be taken on a pleasure ride in a Lancaster bomber around the Cologne Cathedral in the nosegunner bubble, an experience she spoke of with great pride. After returning to Canada on a troop ship she never stepped foot on another boat for the rest of her life.
Upon returning to Canada she settled in Winnipeg where she worked for the DVA and met her husband Cliff. In 1960 Cliff was transferred by Air Canada, so the couple and their four children packed up and moved to Dorion, QC and Alice became a full time homemaker.
Upon retirement Cliff and Alice returned to Manitoba and settled in Winnipeg Beach where many celebrations were enjoyed with family and friends. After Cliff's death in 1992 Alice returned to Winnipeg in 1995. In the years following she began to summer on Lake Nipigon, where she was admired and loved by everyone along the beach, as well as the community of Beardmore.
Alice's second family was the curling community. She curled at Hudson (QC) Legion, Deer Lodge and Assiniboine Curling Clubs until the age of 91, at which time she became an armchair skip making every shot just as she called it. She also loved a competitive game of cards or dominos.
She was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends whenever the need arose. Alice was a very strong and independent woman who was determined to the end not to let dementia get the best of her.
Cremation has taken place and a service and celebration will take place on May 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers, those so wishing may make contributions to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Kidney Foundation.
The family wish to thank the staff at Lion's Manor and Deer Lodge Centre for their tender care.

Dear Auntie Alice, Oh, how I'll miss you. I have so many wonderful memories of you. Anytime we sent a card to each other, I would address it as (to my favorite Auntie Alice on my mother's side). Alice would send her letter as, from your favorite Auntie Alice on your mother's side. I always remember the Mitchell's visiting us in Winnipeg. At that time Montreal was their home. I loved to visit with my cousins. I like how Alice always got things done. She had a very loving, tender heart. Alice was loved. From her family to her many friends. The world has lost a great one. You will never be forgotten. We will be in Winnipeg May27th, 2019 to celebrate my Auntie's life. Love, love, love, you Michele - Posted by: Michele Tyler Langley (Niece) on: Apr 11, 2019

The women of Deer Lodge Ladies Curling Club offer our sincere condolences on the passing of Alice. We were just talking about her at our annual banquet last week . She was so much fun and very serious about the game at the same time . Never reluctant to offer advise with humour rolled in . We are sorry for your loss . Alice was a special person in our lives for many years. We always enjoyed the frantic phone calls between Evelyn and Alice when it was curling time, especially the Briar! She was responsible for our sons love of card games, especially "May I ?" We will play a game in her honour when we get together this summer... Thank you so much Alice. - Posted by: Lynda, Geoff, Matthew and Jeremy Dean (Friends) on: Apr 08, 2019

Oh Alice, what a special person you have been to our family for as long as I can remember. When we last spoke, I promised that we would come to your 100th birthday, and you said that you would do your best to be there too. You are the last of the fine friends that surrounded my family during my youth- all wonderful people, who had been affected by a terrible part of Canada's history, but an event that made each one of you more considerate than entitled; more thoughtful than selfish; more civil than bombast. After having such an effect my sister and brother and me in our youth, you then shared your precious time with our four children, by flying to Vancouver many times to stay with them, while Muggs and I took some breaks. You took them to school, fed them and saw that they did their homework. You passed on your love and principles to them. You are the last of the adult gang that encircled our family in our youth. Muggs and are so grateful to have had a person like you in our lives. Lorne Milne - Posted by: Lorne Milne (Alice's friend) on: Apr 08, 2019
