JOAN RITA HENKE
(SCHARF)

Heaven has called back its most precious angel. Our hearts break to announce the passing of Joan Henke, AKA "Mama" on April 1, 2019.
For over 60 years she was the better half of the "Duo" known as Mama and Willie. Mama was raised in Oak Pointe, MB and was the youngest of 10 children. She met the love of her life when she moved to Winnipeg for work when she was a teenager. The duo was meant to be together and they used to joke that a Scharf was marrying a Henke. Joan and Wilf spent their working life in Winnipeg but going to the lake was a huge part of the Henke family's life. From the time the boys were young, Joan and Wilf made sure to spend every weekend enjoying the splendor of life at the cottage, first at Spruce Sands and then at their retirement home on the lake in Arnes, MB. There have been so many memories, so much love and friendship that have developed over the years that it will forever remain a cherished place for so many.
Joan is survived by her soulmate Wilfred, their two children, Darrell and Shawn, her much loved daughters-in-law, Susan and Robyn, and many loving nieces and nephews.
What is important to know about Joan is that she was truly the most loving and altruistic person anyone could know. Words cannot describe the truly angelic person she was. She honestly wanted the best for others, not just because it was the right thing to do, but because she truly cared more about her friends and family than she cared about anything else, a quality we all aspire to.
Before Joan passed she made a point to ask us to say thank you for the love and support expressed by her friends and family. She wanted you to know she loves you all and appreciates everything. She also wanted us to express her thanks to the staff of Ward H3 at the Health Science Centre for the amazing care and compassion that was shown not only to Mama, but the entire family.
As per Joan's wishes, there will be no funeral service.
Donations in Mama's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or any charity that helps animals.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • To the Henke family, I am one of the lucky people who had the honor of knowing Joan. From the house along the lake to vacationing in Rincón de Guayabitos, she never failed to be the amazing woman she was. On vacation she was my “out of country mom.” She was always there for me. I hadn’t seen Joan for a long time until I ran into her and Wilf recently at HSC. I was walking with my dad in her ward. It was a sad place for our meeting, but I am happy I had the chance to see and talk with her one last time. Joan, thank you for being you. You will be missed by more people than you will ever realize. Laurie Bylyna - Posted by: Laurie Bylyna (Friend) on: May 18, 2019

  • You can shed tears that Joan is gone, or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that Joan will come back, or you can open your eyes and see all what Joan has left. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see her, or you can be full of LOVE you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of all the yesterdays with Joan. You can remember Joan only that she is gone, or you can cherish Joan's memories and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back. Or you can do what Joan would want: SMILE, OPEN YOUR EYES, LOVE AND GO ON! I truly feel blessed to have met such a caring, compassionate and loving lady. Always concerned for the well being of others right to the end. She is a angel now watching over you. • Uncle Wilf, Darrell/Susie, Shawn/Robyn, words cannot express our sadness on the passing of Auntie Joan. She was loved so very much and was a treasure to my life. I still have jewellery she brought me many years ago from Venezuela. I honestly struggle to remember a time that all of you were not part of our lives. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to visit her and all her “boys” one last time at HSC. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love you all very much. - Posted by: Sheona and Dwayne Miller (Friends) on: Apr 06, 2019
