EARL GEORGE BENOIT
March 11, 1950 - April 27, 2019

Peacefully, after a very brief illness, and with his family by his side, Earl passed away.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Diane; his children, Steven (Sharah) and Heather; and his beautiful grandchildren, Jada, Tiegan, Jessica and Abby. Keeping him close to their hearts are his brothers, Bob, Rick, Mike and Phillip; and his sister Patti; his brothers-in-law, Brian (Marj) and Barry (Darlene); and his special cousin Alexis, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Earl was predeceased by his grandson Matthew, his parents, and his brother Scott.
Earl was born in Winnipeg and spent most of his life there. He was married to Diane on April 25, 1970 and their journey began. For most of his career he worked in the automotive aftermarket earning the respect of many along the way and still remains friends with many of the people he met through his work. After retirement he drove a school bus for Pembina Trails School Division for four years and loved the interaction with the children. Golf was Earl's passion and Steven has many fond memories of the time he spent on the golf course with his dad. He was an active bowler, mostly at Coronation Bowling Alley where he made many friends. Earl was a true sports fan, supporting the Jets and the Bombers no matter if they won or lost. He enjoyed going to the Jets games with Heather and enjoyed the Bomber games with both Heather and Steven. After retirement he looked forward to his Friday lunches with his friend Jim at one of the casinos and sometimes even won a little at the slots.
Earl and Diane enjoyed the adventure of travel and were lucky to have had many adventures to the UK, Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico and many road trips throughout Canada and the USA. Three cruises with Heather and Tiegan were very special to him.
Earl was one of the kindest, most caring individuals you could ever meet. His sense of humour and his willingness to help anyone at anytime always shone through. He was our rock. The special bond he had with his granddaughter Tiegan will remain in her heart forever.

Our hearts are broken.
As our special song said... I'll love you "Till".

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.

  • Diane, I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. My deep condolences to you and your family. - Posted by: Pat Goss (Diane's former co-worker) on: May 28, 2019

  • We grew up on Patricia Avenue in King's Park. Earl was 7 years older than me. His younger brother Philip was my best friend and Patti was like my older sister. We moved to Pasadena Avenue and then to Lorette, Mb. I recall seeing Earl at Allanna Pickard's funeral this year. I regret not getting a chance to speak with him before he left. My condolences to you Diane and your family. - Posted by: Ghislaine Lambert (GiGi Lavallee) (Distant relative) on: May 23, 2019

  • Earl, I met you when we were ten and we grew up together as best friends. We built forts, explored the forests, played war, read our comics together, shared our mom’s and dad’s so that it was like we had double parents. You tried to teach me golfing, to no avail. We were more than best friends, we were brothers. Blood brothers, we shared our blood so many years ago. Those are my best memories, of us together, as kids. You were my best man at my wedding, and I was yours. I am still in shock, I did not see it coming, but who does. Please say hi to my second mom and dad and to Scott. Will always cherish your memory. So long pal, Ron Holland - Posted by: Ron (Holland) on: May 18, 2019

  • Who would of thought such a great friendship would of come via an online game Diane and I played, we became friends, we met when Diane came to England and that's when I first met Earl, not knowiing Diane was married let alone with anyone haha I knew from that moment that Earl was very special. Earl just wasn't into the social media aspect, we had many a good chat about golf and in particular Ice Hockey. I stayed with Earl and Diane one Christmas and fantastic memories one after another. Earl was infectious to be around the wisdom and knowledge he left you with was amazing, such a kind caring considerate person who would do anything for anyone, nothing was any trouble and if he couldn't do something he'd find a way to do it. We shared many a laugh mainly at Diane's expense the trip to Gimli, Diane was in the back I'm trying to take a pic on my phone whilst Earl's driving and Earl said use the big camera, lit up the whole car with the flash, Diane would wake briefly and we'd laugh. Earl will be sadly missed, he really was one of the most friendliest and warmhearted of guys you could ever meet. Sincere condolences to Diane and immediate family, may you find comfort in your heart with the many treasured memories you have of Earl. • I knew Earl for over 40 years ... we first met when Diane and I worked together at the University of Manitoba. We shared many good times ... bus trips to U.S. casinos, the horse race game, bingo, Saturday walking and coffee at St. Vital mall. Even after I left Winnipeg our friendship continued and my partner Herb and I would meet Diane and Earl in Fort Lauderdale during their annual Holland America cruise. My fondest memories are the 10 days the four of us cruised together ... we were all great travelling partners, shared many laughs, drinks, scrabble games, and dancing (well, Diane and I did all the dancing!) Earl was one of the kindest individuals ... never a negative word about anyone and what a wry sense of humor. You will be missed, Earl, but forever in our memories. - Posted by: Stefanie Gapinski (Friend) on: May 03, 2019

  • Dear Diane and Family, I offer my most sincere condolences for your loss. May the support of family and friends help you at this difficult time. In sympathy, Lynn - Posted by: Lynn Smith (UM Colleague of Diane) on: May 02, 2019

  • I was saddened to hear about Earl's passing. I had the pleasure of bowling with Earl at Coronation Lanes many years ago for several years. He was always the perfect gentleman even when his scores were less than he wanted on certain nights. But we ended up winning the championship because of his great scores roll-off night. I hadn't seen Earl in a long time until he and I met up last year at Polo Park mall. He hadn't changed much in appearance from 35 years ago! Earl was one of those acquaintances one has in life that you don't forget and wish you knew more people with his kind demeanour. Brian Scarsbrook - Posted by: Brian (friend) on: May 02, 2019
