DOREEN MASSEY
She was born in Selkirk on March 14, 1929 to Ben and Kate Massey. Doreen was one of six children and is survived by her only sister and best friend, Kaye Dewar, her sister-in-law Dorothy Massey, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Frank (Fern), Jack (Maud), Harold and Bert (Peggy), brother-in-law Stewart Dewar, beloved niece Kirstin Sutherland, and nephews, Darryl and Leslie Massey.
Doreen was born, raised, and educated in Selkirk and spent her entire working years in the community. Doreen enjoyed a career of almost 40 years at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC), retiring as the administrative assistant to the Medical Director of the SMHC. Following retirement Doreen became a long-time member of the SMHC Archives Committee where she devoted her efforts to the collecting and preserving of important historic artifacts.
Doreen lived a full and independent life. Doreen was proud of her rich, Massey family roots and she enjoyed tracing her family's heritage in the province and community. She actively followed current affairs, politics and the Blue Jays. Doreen was passionate about music, playing both the piano and the guitar and helping to inspire the next generation. She loved cats, curling and the CBC. She enjoyed comedy programs and a good laugh.
Doreen was a kind, generous, loyal sister, aunt and friend. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by those whose lives she touched.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Betel Home in Selkirk who showed Doreen kindness and compassion during her time there.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Avenue on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, if people so wish, donations may be made to a local pet rescue or to the Selkirk & District Community Foundation.
