LAWRENCE (LORNE) WILLIAM STRICK
June 29, 1935 - May 3, 2019

With sorrow, the family announces the passing of Lorne Strick on May 3, 2019 at the age of 83 years.
Lorne will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor (Kazina), sons, Garry and David (Vicki), and precious grandson Eric. He is also survived by his brothers, Ed (Beverley) and Ken (Halya); sisters-in-law, Donna Strick, Joan Strick and Verna Rumak; brothers-in-law, Henry (Lorraine), Peter, Alfred and William; Aunt Mary Ash, nieces, nephews and cousins, the Ludwick family, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Lena, brothers, Fred and John, father-in-law Peter, mother-in-law Katherine and brother-in-law Stanley.
Lorne was born in Winnipeg and spent his early years on the family farm in Dugald, Manitoba, receiving his education in Dugald and later, Winnipeg. He began his 38-year teaching career in rural Manitoba schools, retiring in 1993 after 26 years at Lord Selkirk School in Winnipeg. He enjoyed his part-time patrol position at Birds Hill Park and was witness to many projects and events there, including folk festivals and the build-up to and participation in the Papal Mass of 1984.
Lorne had a passion for photography and has left us a treasure of memories in picture. He was skilled in many trades, loved gardening, and was a handyman always willing to help others. He enjoyed sports and old-time music, especially hockey and the Saturday night Zabava and Polka Party radio programs.
During his time at Concordia Hospital and his short time at Holy Family Home, Lorne demonstrated remarkable courage and faith. We thank the doctors, nurses, health care aides and other staff for their care.
Lorne was a devoted and supportive Son, Husband, Dad and Pa. He had a special bond with his grandson Eric, who brought so much joy to his life. Lorne went to as many of Garry, David and Eric centered events as possible, including hockey games, graduations, school Masses, piano recitals and golf tournaments. Family was most important to him, and he was happiest when in the company of family and friends. Lorne was an inspiration to all of us. We will miss his unceasing thoughtfulness and kindness, his strength, and his quiet, calming presence.
Pallbearers will be Garry, David, Eric, Ken and Jason Strick, and Ted Chapman.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Parish, 264 Donwood Drive, Winnipeg, with Brother Doss officiating and viewing one half-hour prior to Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Parkinson Canada.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I just heard the very sad news of Lorne’s passing last month. I have many fond memories working with my friend, Lorne as a park patrol officer at Birds Hill Park. He was a true mentor and such a kind, friendly teacher at Lord Selkirk School. I will never forget meeting Lorne for the first time as a rookie park patrol officer in June 1979. He showed me all the ropes in a supportive, fatherly manner and was the best supervisor one could ask for. He knew the park inside out and exemplified how to problem solve any difficult situation in a successful, calm manner. I later connected with my friend Lorne a few months later, in my very first teaching position at Lord Selkirk School. What great luck for me! I was a newbie teacher and nervous about my first day teaching. I noticed Lorne and his friendly smile down the hallway by the library. “What are you doing here, Lorne? “ “Albert, I teach here!” That was all I needed to help make my absolute first permanent teaching day and my first teaching year a success! Thank you Lorne for your quiet but genuine friendship both in the classrooms at Lord Selkirk School and in the rolling natural hills of your home away from home, Birds Hill Park! He was indeed a gentle and respectful man, an absolute pleasure and treat to work with!! My Sincerest Condolences to the entire Strick family - Posted by: Albert Yanofsky (Former teaching colleague at Lord Selkirk School and former Birds Hill Park park patrol colleague) on: Jun 19, 2019

I hope you find comfort in knowing that Lorne's passing is grieved by all conservation officers, park patrol and maintenance staff who worked with him at Bird's Hill park! Lorne taught us all how to be better! Thank you for your service Lorne and Rest In Peace! - Posted by: André Desrosiers (Conservation colleague) on: May 09, 2019

  • I have many great memories and appreciate the wisdom Lorne passed to me and other employees while working in Birds Hill Park. Lorne truly knew every corner of the park and his knowledge and calm and compassionate demeanor allowed him to deal with every type of park user, from young to old, from bad to good. He was a true mentor for some of our young Park Patrol. Sorry to hear about his passing, he was truly a gentleman. - Posted by: Darin Balcaen (Former co-worker) on: May 09, 2019

  • We were so sorry to hear that Lorne passed away. We will always remember the Visits we had with the family in Winnipeg and the ones out here in Inwood. After a very active life he will now be able to rest in peace. We send our sympathy to his family. - Posted by: Marion Strick. (Cousin by marriage.) on: May 08, 2019

  • Our heartfelt condolences to Auntie Eleanor, Garry, David, Vicki and Eric. May God, family, friends, and cherished memories comfort you at this difficult time. I will treasure my fond memories of uncle Lorne from our numerous summer trips out west. Meeting us at the gate in his Birds Hill uniform for our annual Strick family picnic, hosting countless dinners (uncle Lorne barbecued the best pork chops), his slide shows and home movies (remember the Birds Hill Park race?) and sitting around the table with his brothers sharing hours of stories about their days on the farm are a few that come to mind. I will remember his kind hospitality, his thoughtful manner, cheerful smile, and gentle spirit. I picture him now at peace, sitting with Dad and Uncle Fred, laughing and reminiscing about good times, just like they always did. - Posted by: Laurie Parent and family (Niece) on: May 08, 2019

  • My heartfelt condolences Eleanor, and to your family. Another piece has broken from the family chain. May the love, strength, and memories with your family and friends keep Lorne's peaceful spirit with you. Lorne was a gentle man, always ready with the camera and a smile. You were truly blessed with Lorne by your side throughout your entire life. He is at peace, he is missed. - Posted by: Betty Yascheshyn (Cousin by marriage) on: May 07, 2019

  • Although it has been many years ago that I taught with LORNE at Lord Selkirk School I will always remember his quiet and friendly ways. Our heartfelt sympathy to all of the family. Eileen & Gordon - Posted by: Eileen Zinkowski (Former colleagues ) on: May 07, 2019

  • I had the unique pleasure of not only having Lorne as one of my teacher’s (penmanship) at Lord Selkirk but eventually teaching grade 5/6 next door. He loved to come across to my desk and whisper a joke in my ear and then scurry back to his desk chuckling. We always had great fun and he made my newbie teaching experience a wonderful one! I offer my deepest condolences to the family. He was a very special teacher! - Posted by: Bonnie Boychuk (Former student, colleague, friend) on: May 07, 2019
