GEORGE ALEXANDER MYER
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his children, David (Barbara) and Kathryn (Raymond); grandchildren, Crystal (Adam), Ryan, Kyle, Michelle, Nicole (Mike), Karen (Mathew) and Jeffrey (Brynn); and numerous great-grandchildren; cousins, and many friends. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Sheila in 2015; and his parents, Samuel and Emily Myer (nee Kling).
Dad was born and raised in the North End of Winnipeg. In his younger years he enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Dorothy Lake, building models, playing football and flying airplanes; having obtained his pilot's licence in 1955. Dad joined the Canadian Army Reserves in 1952, transferred to Royal Canadian Air Force in 1960 and was promoted to First Officer in 1963.
He attended Isaac Newton High School where he met the love of his life, Sheila. They married in 1958, having moved many times but settled on Maynard Close for 42 years, developing lifelong friendships with many of the neighbours. In 2013, Mom and Dad decided to downsize and move into a condo where they found many new cherished friends.
Dad was a pioneer in computer software innovation. He worked for the Government of Manitoba creating software programs for tracking Provincial Sales Tax in 1967, and the Manitoba Immunization Monitoring System. He retired from Manitoba Health in 1997.
Dad enjoyed many hobbies such as photography and travel; he was an avid model railroader, and sports enthusiast, never missing a Jets or Bombers game. However, his greatest joys were his grandchildren, and the creation of special bonds and memories that were made with them. Dad was strong and kind, pragmatic, a loving and generous man who always put his family first and was a great friend to many. He had a great sense of humour, loved life and was courageous, which he continued to demonstrate over that past several months. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Gordon Dalling and the nurses and aides at Seven Oaks Hospital 5th floor, Unit 5-7 for their exceptional care and compassion.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, MB with Pastor Gerhard Friesen officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dad's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

We remember George fondly as our very welcoming neighbor on Maynard Close. He and Sheila were the best neighbors anyone could every wish for. Our girls still often talk about Kyle and Ryan. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. From Emiliano, Sarah, Delaney and Mischa Galera - Posted by: Galera Family (Old Neighbors on Maynard Close ) on: Jun 19, 2019

My condolences to George's family and friends. I had the pleasure of working with George at the Manitoba government in the late 1970's/early 80's. I was the young kid hired as the office clerk. He and a coworker, Ed Grenda, taught me that real men did play with trains! Rest in peace. - Posted by: Karen Kepp (Former coworker) on: May 13, 2019

To George's family, our heartfelt deepest condolences. My earliest memory of George is down in the basement of our Cobourg Avenue home. Playing with Opps! running 5 O gauge model trains. That always gave me a thrill to have the Model Railway group come to the house. Such a one of a kind group of real lifetime friends. My dad really enjoyed sharing memories and laughs at the Gordon Hotel every Thursday. George will be missed very much. Rest peacefully!
