EVELYN RUTH KAROLINE LOCHHEAD

On May 4, 2019, Mom, Evelyn Ruth Karoline Lochhead, took her last breath as the 23rd Psalm was read by her Pastor. A beautiful ending to a life well lived.
She was born on November 12, 1923 in Ridgeville, Manitoba, the youngest of six children born to her parents, Rudolf and Eva Laufersweiler. She married Dad on February 26, 1949.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Murray in 1992, her parents, and siblings, Alfred, Leonard, Elsie, Louise and Walter. She is remembered and loved by her son Doug, daughter-in-law Elaine, grandchildren, Andrea, Kathryn and Richard, as well as Kathryn's husband Jens and Richard's wife Tannis, and four great-grandchildren, Rachel, James, Lilyanne and Benjamin. Many nieces and nephews and her special friend Ed Wirth also survive her.
Mom lived life to the fullest! Her foundation was her deep Christian faith, her priority was her family and her interests and accomplishments were many during her lifetime. She grew up in Ridgeville where she was involved in the family business. After its closure, she continued to live in Ridgeville until they moved to Emerson, where Dad worked as an Immigration Officer, then moving to Calgary, Alberta and finally back to Winnipeg after Dad's retirement.
Mom loved teddy bears, the colour pink, dark chocolate and being with people. She was an active participant in many community groups. She was a piano teacher for many years and even made her own record. She valued an active lifestyle curling, dancing and walking whenever she could to get her exercise. Mom had an entrepreneurial spirit and besides working in the family business, she was the agent for a Manitoba medical health coverage program in southeast Manitoba before provincial Medicare began. She was an Avon rep and sold Tupperware. My mother was a strong believer in community service. She was awarded a Certificate of Recognition in 1966 from Radio Southern Manitoba for her active role in the community. She was president of the Lutheran Church Women for Central Canada, church organist, past president and secretary of the curling club, president of the Manitoba Horticultural Society, a charter member of the Dominion City Order of the Eastern Star, a Sunday School teacher and a dedicated volunteer. Mom was a medical secretary in the Emerson doctors' office and the Executive Assistant to the Vice-President of Exploration at Dome Petroleum when she lived in Calgary. After my dad died, she became involved with Age and Opportunity and was a co-facilitator for bereavement groups, assisting seniors after the death of their spouse.
Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at age 75; she fought on dealing with her deteriorating health as best she could. She lived her last four and a half years as a resident of St. Norbert Nursing Home. In her typical spirit, she participated in all of the activities that she could physically do, played the newspaper Jumble with her visitors and continued to count backwards from 100 to keep her mind sharp. Thank you to St. Norbert Personal Care Home for their excellent care and compassion for my mother and a special thank you to Elaine for all of her care and love for my mother over the many years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Drive, Winnipeg. Interment to follow at a later date at Friedenstahl Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada in Manitoba or the memorial fund of Epiphany Lutheran Church are appreciated.
