GRACE BARTON
(nee HAGGLUND)
1930 - 2019
She was predeceased by parents, Martha and Alex, stepfather Ole Olson, husband Ray, sisters, Ruth Benzick, Bea Jacobson and Dorothy McConnell, and brother-in-law Ross Benzick.
She will be lovingly remembered by nieces, Brenda Gulay (Ivan), Colleen Domino and Stacey Benzick (Sean), nephew Curtis Benzick, brother-in-law Murray McConnell, great-nieces and nephews, Brett (Ingen), Cara (Brad), and Derric Gulay, Odin and Chloe Domino, great-great-nephew Evan Gulay, cousins and friends.
Grace grew up in Teulon, MB and graduated from Teulon Collegiate earning the Governor General's Medal. After teaching for two years, she enrolled at the University of Manitoba completing a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Earning her Masters in Social Work from the University of McGill was one of her proudest accomplishments that was followed by a rewarding career as a social worker for Child and Family Services.
She had fond memories of summers spent at the cottage at Lake of the Woods and Matlock and of trips abroad having travelled to countries such as Sweden, New Zealand, Spain and Costa Rica to name a few. Grace was a talented seamstress, an avid reader, enjoyed playing trump whist and bridge, bowling and curling and made lifelong friendships with her many friends and co-workers. She was a kind, supportive and loving sister and aunt who always let us know how proud of us she was and was excited to have new great and great-great-nieces and nephews join the family. Grace enjoyed the symphony and ballet and was proud to have attended the RWB performances from 1950 until recently. Always determined, she never let the obstacles she faced slow her down. A cup of good coffee was never far from hand and Grace never turned down the chance to enjoy a strawberry milkshake.
We would like to thank the staff at the Maples Personal Care Home for the great care and compassion Auntie Grace received during her time there.
At Grace's request, there will be no formal funeral service. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at Norris Lake Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Grace's name to the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, donations@assiniboinepark.ca

I and a member of our Pastoral Care Team, were planning to visit Grace and discovered the sad news that Grace had died. Grace was a regular member of Augustine United Church's "Bunch for Lunch" seniors' group which gathered once a month for friendship and food and the occasional outing. Unfortunately after many decades of service that group disbanded a couple of years ago but I continued to enjoy visiting Grace as did members of our congregation . Grace will certainly be missed. She was a lovely person and always a joy to be around!! - Posted by: Rev. Bob Gilbert (Minister at Augustine United Church) on: May 23, 2019
