GERHARD PAUL SCHMIDT

On May 9, 2019, after a brief battle with cancer, Gerhard Schmidt passed away at the age of 78 years.
Gerhard leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife of 57 years, Frances; son David; daughter Dory Cameron (Steve Stehr); grandchildren, Jared (Danielle), Annie (Justin) and Derek (Tessa), along with numerous nephews and nieces.
Gerhard was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Hedwig Schmidt; as well as siblings, Bernard Jr. Schmidt and Hedwig Holland.
Gerhard was born on July 10, 1940 in the town of Langendorf, Germany. In 1953, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg. Gerhard was attending Miles MacDonell Collegiate when he met the love of his life Frances. After high school Gerhard worked for the Royal Bank as a teller. While employed at the bank, Gerhard was transferred to North Battleford, SK. Gerhard wed Frances in 1961 and took his bride back to North Battleford to begin their life together. Shortly after getting married, Gerhard left the bank and was hired by the Town of Battleford as a Police Constable. In 1964, Gerhard resigned and moved the family back to Winnipeg where he was hired by the Winnipeg Police Department as a Police Constable. In 1995, after a 30 year career Gerhard retired from the Winnipeg Police Service. In retirement Gerhard worked briefly for Revenue Canada. In 1998, Gerhard was hired by the Manitoba Sheriff Service as a Sheriff's Officer. In 2008 Gerhard retired from the Sheriff Service.
A special thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care Unit of the St. Boniface Hospital, as well as a special thanks to friends Jake Enns and John Ives for all their help and support.
Cremation has taken place. Per Gerhard's wishes, no formal service will be held. A private family service will be held at a later date.

  • Deepest condolences to the family. I knew George for the years when we were members of the Winnipeg Police Department. George was always willing to help even to tasks off the job.
