DR. DALE BERG
1938 - 2019

The world has lost a wonderful, loving and caring husband and father. With a heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of his passing on May 21, 2019.
Dale is survived by his wife Joan, children, Loren (Heather) and Michelle (Darren), and by his grandchildren, Timothy and Elizabeth.
Dale had an enduring faith and deep devotion to helping others, characteristics and qualities which defined him throughout his life.
His faith was expressed through philanthropic deeds to help others and by serving the Lutheran Church in Alberta and Manitoba as a pastor and interim pastor.
After receiving his PhD from the University of Alberta he was employed by the University of Manitoba teaching Statistics and Family Dynamics as a sociologist. He also embarked on incorporating his own research firm which did business with Canadian firms.
His community interests were represented by serving on the boards of St. John's Ravenscourt School and the Cook's Creek Heritage Museum.
While Dale toiled in obscurity, he touched many lives throughout his three careers. These people were there for him and family as he journeyed through life and his strokes. The family has appreciated all their kindnesses and deeds. The family would like to thank his health care professionals who treated Dale with respect and compassion especially the Brightwater staff.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church (1311 Dakota St., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2N 1V8).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Lutheran Church or a charity of choice. In Dale's memory, we also request that you perform an act of charity this week.
His absence is profound and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Dr Berg was the kindest teacher I ever had. He was incredibly encouraging and generous with his time and I felt blessed to have him as an advisor (1984-1986). I still remember the time he and Joan hosted me and another master student in their lovely home. My heartfelt condolences to Joan and family as I just found out of his passing. • Pastor Berg was a young, intelligent, fun and energetic minister at our church, Prince of Peace Lutheran, in Edmonton, in the early to mid 60's when I was in my mid teens, He officiated at my mother's funeral when she passed away suddenly in 1964. I saw him again when he and I were at the university of Alberta in the late 60's. I think of him fondly from time to time and was thinking of him again only a couple of days ago, perhaps because one of my fond memories of Christmas is of the Christmas eve services that we had, .....and then today serendipitously received a copy of his obituary from my sister Pat in the mail. I send my very best wishes to Joan and all of his family yours truly Bruce Filan - Posted by: Bruce Filan (friend) on: Dec 30, 2019

  • So sad. Dale loved life. He particularly loved a good "conversation" Especially if it was about politics, government, the church as an organization, or any number of current events. We will miss you Larry and Pam - Posted by: Larry & Pam Ring (friends) on: May 27, 2019

  • My sincere condolences to Joan, Loren, Michelle and family. Whilst I have been out of touch with Dale for some years now, he is not at all forgotten! He was a fantastic professor, supervisor and trusted friend to me during my time at the U.of M. - Posted by: La Dawn Block (Friend / Student of Dr. Dale Berg) on: May 27, 2019
