Another classmate from high school mentioned that Arnie had passed away. I am kind of the historian for that class of '63, so will send out a notice to the classmates I have emails for and tell them of his passing. So sorry for your loss..........from comments from others I can see he was a well loved man. - Posted by: Carole Anne Cech (Former classmate at Morton West High School, Berwyn Class of 1963) on: Apr 01, 2021

Uncle Arnie was my mother's (Catherine) brother. We got to see him several times at my grandparents' house in Lyons, Illinois (where I also now work) as I was growing up. In the early 1970s our family visited him in Winnipeg for a week or so when he worked in a greenhouse. Uncle Arnie served in the U.S. Air Force in the Philippines at Clark Air Force Base I believe. My mother trusted in Jesus Christ as her Saviour and I trust that she and my Aunt Barbara have been reunited with their brother as we too eagerly look for that day. - Posted by: Dave Manderson (Nephew) on: Jul 20, 2019

RIP you were one of my favourite parts of elementary school. Thank you for always having your cart ready with juice and milk for us. We really appreciated all your hard work. Thank you for everything. Rest easy. ❤️ Heaven has gained another angel today. 😢 - Posted by: Stephanie (Former student ) on: Jun 10, 2019

I recall Arnie’s love of animals. He told stories of fostering many dogs over the years. In his role as custodian he would need to trap mice at school. One morning I came into the staff room and noticed something in the corner on the floor: Arnie had trapped a mouse in the night but had felt so guilty about it that he had put up a tiny fence around the “crime scene” complete with a chalk outline of where the body had been found! I will miss his sense of humor and his quiet faith. I knew him as one of the good guys. RIP. - Posted by: John Sawatzky (Colleague at WMES) on: Jun 08, 2019

Although often quiet, Arnie was a keen observer of the goings on in a busy school and used that knowledge often to help out beyond what were the requirements of his job description. No matter what was going on, he always stopped to be ready for the lunchtime bell and had his cart set up with mathematically neat rows of milk and juice for kids to pick up at lunchtime if they had tickets. Arnie knew every kid's name and admitted that this lunchtime ritual was one of his favourite parts of the day. His quiet sense of humor, his hard work ethic and his kind heart were so appreciated. I feel lucky to have known him. - Posted by: Sheralyn Friesen (colleague) on: Jun 07, 2019

I had many pleasant conversations with Arnie over the years that we were both at WMES. One interesting concept that we discovered, was that we were both born in Berwyn. Only I was born in Berwyn, AB and he was born in Berwyn, Il. Arnie was a great help in my art room and went over and beyond what was required of him to help out whenever he saw a need, or if I asked him for assistance. I think of him often, and wondered how he was doing and where he was. I think everyone soon knew of his love for baseball! RIP, Arnie. - Posted by: Les W Dewar (Former colleague and friend) on: Jun 07, 2019
