MARGARET MARIE KUHN
January 18, 1938 - June 3, 2019
Marie was born at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC, the first daughter of Arne Salvesen and Edna (nee Winther). She was baptized into the Christian faith at First Lutheran Church in Vancouver and nurtured and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church. She attended Hastings and Templeton schools, graduating from Britannia High School in 1956. She studied at the University of British Columbia, Pacific Lutheran College and the University of Alberta, earning a Bachelor of Education in 1976.
She met her husband Kenneth C. Kuhn in the Lutheran Student Association at UBC and they were married in 1960. She taught elementary and kindergarten in Burnaby, BC; LaGrange, IL; Edmonton, AB; Richmond, BC and special education at Weston School in Winnipeg.
A devoted and caring wife, mother and teacher, she is survived by her loving husband Ken, son Philip (Dervila O'Dowd) Nelson, BC; devoted daughter Lisa - an attentive caregiver during her mother's illness; and youngest son Paul (Donna) and her beloved grandchild Elizabeth, all of Winnipeg. She is also survived by her sister Shirley (Geoff Lovell), Burnaby; brother Ken Salvesen (Debbie Stevenson), New Westminster; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Marie Kuhn and John and Linda Dawson, Burnaby; and cousins, nieces and nephews in BC and England.
A faithful, adventurous and independent woman, she accompanied her pastor husband to Chicago, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg, where she has resided since 1990. She enjoyed travelling the world, including Norway and other countries in Europe, Russia, Africa, the Holy Land, Thailand, China, Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, Cuba and Hawaii.
Marie was a very social person, surrounded by a close-knit group of women friends. She served as the coordinator of a Christian education team instructing Sunday School teachers. She loved reading and shared her insights with members of a book group drawn from many faith backgrounds.
Marie survived polio in childhood, however breast cancer invaded her in 2018 which eventually took her life. We are thankful for the competent care she received at Grace Hospital and the dedicated palliative care providers in the community and at St. Boniface Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14, at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor Street at Sargent with the Reverend Michael Kurtz presiding.
In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the First Lutheran 150 Anniversary Fund or a charity of your choice.
"Children of the heavenly father, safely in your bosom gather. Nestling bird nor star in heaven, such a refuge e'er was given."
