JEAN HANSEN
(nee STOBART, SMITH)
April 27, 1925 - May 31, 2019
Jean is survived by her daughter Wanda Smith and Gordon Hopper, sister Kathleen McCaffrey, Lucy Smith (daughter-in-law), Laurie (Brent) Skene and Lynda Henderson (stepdaughters) and her many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her son Greg Smith and her husband Vic Hansen.
Jean was born in Winnipeg where she lived all of her 94 years. She spent her childhood in the West End, adult years in East Kildonan and North Kildonan. She completed high school at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. She worked briefly for Canadian National Railway and later joined Office Overload / Drake International where she remained until she retired in 1990. Jean loved the sun, spending many summer holidays with her family and young children at Grand Beach. Later spending time at Winnipeg Beach with her husband Vic.
Dancing was a passion for Jean. She began dancing at a young age when her older sister Olive paid for her dance classes. She studied with the Winnipeg Ballet Club later known as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and danced with a troupe that toured Manitoba entertaining the soldiers during the war years. Dancing remained a part of her life - square dancing with her husband Vic and more recently dancing with the West End Cloggers.
Jean was a social and active person and remained so throughout her life. She travelled widely visiting places that included the Great Wall, Machu Picchu, Ayers Rock and Mt. Kilimanjaro. On her 90th Birthday she toured England, her ancestral roots, and met her relatives.
Jean was an avid golfer, her favourite golf course being Palm Springs which she played many times. She golfed the many golf courses in Winnipeg and rurally. For years she enjoyed golfing with her younger sister Kay and husband Bill at Fairmont Hot Springs, BC. Jean last golfed in the fall of 2018; while she hadn't been out this year, her golf clubs were in the car ready but the weather hadn't yet cooperated. She was also a devoted curler for many years, only reluctantly stopping following her knee replacement.
Jean was a long-time member of the Good Neighbours Active Living Centre in East Kildonan. She tirelessly volunteered - serving coffee in Hob Nobs, sorting books in the bookstore, selling raffle tickets and telephoning volunteers. As well she participated in numerous classes offered at the centre - dance classes, exercise classes, yoga and recently Nordic pole walking.
Jean enjoyed the Scandinavian Club of Winnipeg where she often played cards and attended the TGIF speaker's dinner.
Jean regularly attended the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Rainbow Stage and as many cultural and performing arts events that she could. She frequently enjoyed dining with her many friends and family.
Jean will be remembered as kind and generous, always willing to help in whatever way she could. She was a friend to all who knew her and kind to those she just met.
Thanks to the Fisher and Bangart families who comforted her in a time of need.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

We wish to extend our sympathy to Wanda and the extended family on the loss of their mother and friend in life's wonderful journey. The memories created on the farm with Wanda, Greg and Jean were special. Those same memories of special events, holidays, and milestones of your lives will be the comforting moments in the coming days. We wish you well. - Posted by: Mae and Carl Fisher (relatives) on: Jun 10, 2019

I will truly miss my Auntie Jean! We had many wonderful lunches and dinners together and enjoyed going out to see museums and choirs together. She had a real love for living and inspired me to live fully and bravely. I'll be thinking of you Wanda and wish I was here with you this next week. Love always Connie - Posted by: Connie (Niece) on: Jun 08, 2019
