VERA HALBERT
December 5, 1924 - June 9, 2019
Mom was born in Winnipeg on December 5, 1924, the youngest daughter of Teresa and Michael Markus. On February 22, 1946, Vera married the love of her life, Stephen Halbert, with whom she spent 51 wonderful years of marriage until Dad's passing on May 16, 1997. Vera and Stephen were lifelong Winnipeg residents, residing much of their lives in the Kirkfield Park/Westwood district of the city.
Growing up during the Great Depression and a time of war, Mom knew the meaning of hard work and remaining humble. To this end, she took pride in her successes and looked after everything she was able to acquire in life. Mom enjoyed tidiness and order and strived to instill these values in her children.
Throughout her life, Mom was a terrific cook and a fantastic baker. Never one to shy away from new recipes, Vera always possessed a freezer filled with an assortment of delicious treats. Visiting Mom at any time in her life was quite an experience. As her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends can attest, during a visit to Mom's home was spent with her wanting everyone to eat more. This trend continued right up to the day of her passing, when she would often ask visitors, "have you eaten today?"
Vera was predeceased by an infant son, Gordon Thomas Halbert in 1948, husband Stephen Halbert in 1997; her parents, Michael and Teresa Markus; six brothers, George, Andrew, Michael, Frank, Norman and Samuel; two sisters, Anne and Margaret; and her son-in-law Guy Warren. Vera is survived by her daughters, Linda Warren and Laurie Cadarian (Tim); son Don Halbert (Carolyn); grandchildren, Cameron Warren (Cassy), Kristin Warren (Jason), Shawn McGowan, Brent McGowan (Celeste), Terry Cadarian, Taylor Cadarian (Joey), Stephen Halbert (Tracy), Jeffrey Halbert (Alex) and Timothy Halbert (Karly). Mom was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Joel, Amy, Addison, Eden, Vinny, Tessa, Jaedys and Jonathan.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff of the Grace General Hospital, 5th Floor North Ward; Dr. Macek; the staff of The Rosewood Assisted Living Facility and Sturgeon Creek 2 Assisted Living Centre.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service of remembrance was held on June 18 at Garden Park Baptist Church.
Should family and friends so desire, a contribution to Vera's memory can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
