ALFRED ZYDOR ZORNIAK
Those left to remember his steadfast love is his wife, Mary Louise, son, Ken (Lasha) and grandchildren, Kya and Maden and extended family and friends.
Born at St. Boniface Hospital, the first son of Anne and Steve Zorniak, he grew up in Transcona with his two brothers, Wayne and Don. While working part-time as a shoe salesman at Eaton's, Alfred took his teacher training at the Provincial Normal School. He obtained his Industrial Arts Degree from the University of North Dakota. His teaching career with the Winnipeg School Division teaching Industrial Arts spanned over 35 years, first at Elmwood, then at Kelvin and Churchill High Schools.
Being a teacher afforded him the opportunity to pursue other activities during the summer holidays. One of his great passions was wood working which led him to establish his home-based business named "Z Squared". Projects included houses, garages, decks as well as fine detailed furniture. Alfred was known in the neighbourhood as "Mr. Fix It", and he took pleasure in helping others with any repair job.
Alfred, had a sense of adventure which included long family road trips across the continent and abroad. He enjoyed camping, and all the fun and challenges that it entailed. In the summer of 1979, he volunteered to teach with O.C.O.D. in Guyana, South America. For several years, he travelled across the prairie provinces as a crop adjuster. He was a member of the Canadian Air Force Reserve, which afforded him the opportunity to travel and socialize at many great events at the "Mess".
Alfred was able to enjoy 25 years of retirement that allowed him time with his family which was his greatest joy. He showed his love for others by doing things for them and was a "man of action", always happy to step in and lend a hand on any task.
We would like to thank all of Alfred's caregivers over the past several years who provided Alfred with love and respect. We would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Golden Links Lodge for their exceptional care, comfort and compassion.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue.

I had the great pleasure of having Mr. Zorniak as my drafting teacher at Churchill High School in the late 80's. He took me under his wing, saw my potential and was a major supporter of my journey to becoming an architect. He always went the extra mile, like staying after hours to cut wood for me so that I could build models. He even came to visit me once in architecture school at the UofM. He was a great teacher and a great man. Life goes on and memories endure... - Posted by: Ben Klumper (Former Student) on: Oct 29, 2020

Had the privilege of having Mr Zorniak as a shops teacher in the 70's. Learned a lot from him. He was a very likeable man and was always there to help and give guidance. As with many others I was sorry that I never stayed in contact over the years. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Andy Dodd (Former Student) on: Mar 30, 2020

So sorry to hear about "Mr. Zorniak's" passing. (That is the only way I can address him still!) He was my drafting teacher when I first started Churchill, and he made my transition to junior high very easy. He was such a pleasant man. I still have memories of his classroom with those big green drafting tables. Sending my condolences to his family. His memory will live on in all of us. - Posted by: Heather Kerr-Vermeulen (Student ) on: Jun 25, 2019

Al believed that “Any job that I am going to attempt, I will do it to the very best of my ability”. Al was truly devoted to his wife, Mary-Louise. Whatever Mary-Louise might want was EXACTLY what Al wanted to give her. I remember Al built her a lovely cement patio in their backyard a long time ago, and he was incredibly HAPPY and proud to do it for her. Al was an exceptionally KIND man. - Posted by: Wendy Winslow (Friend) on: Jun 22, 2019

Had Mr. Zorniak a few times as a shops teacher about 1968-71, both for wood working & metal. Always liked him & had a good relationship. Remember he had taught Driver's Ed & knew my dad, who also taught that evenings. Funny what/when memories surface; was just talking to friends about Churchill & him as a teacher last weekend [I'd never had auto shop] & remember a comment by Mr. Zorniak [again funny... never knew or remembered his first name!] He said he thought it was on purpose he & another teacher were placed at the same school... Mr. Zorniak & Mr. Zaborniak... used to get each other's mail! - Posted by: Brent Daly (Former student @ Churchill High) on: Jun 22, 2019

I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Zorniak for a number of years as my shops teacher at Churchill High. In grade 7 he had to herd us like cattle, but the follow years - we mellowed him out..... It is because of Alf, that's what my Dad called him, that I pursued a career associated with sheet metal. He was, one of the good ones, and I'm very sorry I never kept in contact after the first year out of school. Rest in peace Mr. Zorniak. I spent a number of years working across the hall from Alf at Churchill High School. We did not always see eye to eye, but Alf always bent over backwards to to help me out as a new teacher. Alf was a good teacher, friend and mentor. He will be missed. - Posted by: Don Kowalski (Colleague) on: Jun 22, 2019
