MARJORIE ANN HOMENICK
1939 - 2019

Marjorie Ann Homenick (nee Scott) died peacefully on June 19, 2019, aged 80 years, at St. Boniface Hospital, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Although her health had been declining in recent years, her passing came much earlier than expected. She had most of her family and close friends by her side during her passing, and she was able to say goodbye.
Marjorie was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, on March 9, 1939 along with her twin brother Jim. Her family lived on the Isle of Man until 1954, when they moved to Liverpool, England. She immigrated to Canada in 1957 when she was 18. She and Al married in 1959 and moved to Morris, Manitoba, and returned to Winnipeg in 1970, where she lived the remainder of her life.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Al, and her children, Pamela (Kathy), Gayle and Scott. She leaves her sister Lilian, and her twin brother Jim, half-brother David (Ann) and half-sister Brenda in the UK, and numerous other in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. She also leaves her devoted terrier, Buster, who enjoyed equal status with her children.
She was predeceased by her father James Scott, her mother Lilian Scott (nee Bird), both of Liverpool, England, her stepmother Edna and half-brothers, Lesley and Tom. She is also predeceased by her infant son, Richard Wayne Homenick, whom she mentioned in her final moments.
Everywhere Marjorie went, she made friends and held court. She was extremely social and loved to entertain. She was held in high esteem in many social circles and condolences are coming in from all over the world. Her dedication to her family and friends was readily shown through her annual Boxing Day party that she held each and every year, even in her final years.
Marjorie was known for her tireless work ethic and her social nature which gave her an aptitude for the several leadership and civic roles she held in her life. She ran for Town Council of Morris, Manitoba, twice in the 1960s, at a time when it was uncommon for women to seek such an office. Each time she lost by a single vote. On account of her trusting nature, she never asked for a recount, despite being advised to do so. She also ran for School Trustee in Morris. She was elected president of World Airlines Clubs Association and led that international organization from 1990 to 1994. She was the first, and only, woman to be Commodore of the Royal Manitoba Yacht Club. She was involved in several other community organizations throughout her life.
She loved boating and was awarded a lifetime membership to the Royal Manitoba Yacht Club. She loved her summers at Boundary Creek Marina at Winnipeg Beach where she would spend much of her time on her cabin cruiser, the "Teddy Too". She has requested that her ashes be scattered in Lake Winnipeg. Even in declining health, her many friends assisted her in getting to the lake on weekends.
She held several jobs throughout her working life. But the highlight was a 15-year career with Air Canada, which ignited a lifelong love of exotic travel, which she passed on to her children. It was her work with Air Canada that led to her involvement with World Airlines Clubs Association.
The family would like to thank the many health care professionals who have helped her over the past few years, including: Tenise Nolet (RN) and Russ Albak (MD) and the rest of the amazing staff at the PRIME program at Deer Lodge Centre; Chris Sathianathan (MD) and the staff at the Dialysis Unit at St. Boniface Hospital; Cory Baillie (MD); Louis Van Rooyen (MD); Riverview Health Care Centre; all the home care providers who have assisted Marj on a daily basis; the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital Acute Cardiac Care Centre (ACCC), who helped Marjorie and her family so much during her final hours; and her nieces, Heather Freeland (Paramedic) and Janet Freeland (RN/CRN).
A memorial service will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, or another charity that cares for animals, in her name.

  • My heartfelt condolences Al, Pam, Gayle, and Scott. I just found out about Marj yesterday at a dinner gathering and I was very saddened to learn about her passing. The very first time I met Marj I took an instant liking to her. She had a way of making you feel like you had known each other for years. I am truly sorry for your loss, she shall be missed! - Posted by: Virginia Pochinco (Friend) on: Sep 30, 2019

  • Dear Al and Family, may precious memories bring comfort to you in your time of loss. May it lift your heart to know that others share your sorrow. Many thoughts of sympathy from Veronica Sichewski on behalf of the MTS VOLUNTEERS - Posted by: Veronica Sichewski on behalf of MTS Volunteers (Friends to Al through MTS) on: Jul 03, 2019

  • “Auntie” Marj met my mother Yvonne, when both were 18 years old and they were roommates along with my mother's two young aunts. She and Al and their family spent lots of time with ours over the years. She was an extremely generous and thoughtful person, always doing whatever she could for anyone in need, delivering food to us at the hospital when my father was ill or even supplying her famous steak and kidney pie when my mom had out of town visitors. She always showed interest in our lives. She gave the toast to the bride at our wedding when it was unusual to have a female do the toast. She loved to socialize and this stayed with her until the end. My mother and my sisters and I were privileged to be there with her to say goodbye. Even then, she showed an interest in how everyone else was doing. We will all miss her terribly. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Erin and Oliver Bereznay (Family friend) on: Jun 26, 2019

  • Marj and I met at Air Canada and became instant friends. We lost connections over the years when I moved in 1983. Recently, we had reconnected on Facebook. Marj took me on my first trip to England where we spent a few days with Edna and Jim in Runcorn and then a trip to Wales to visit David and Ann. At the Sun Trevor, Marj helped serve meals for the evening and I was the bar maid. We returned to London and did a bus tour. It was one of my most favourite, wonderful, fun and memorable trips. We almost got arrested in Harrod's when we were trying on designer hats and taking pictures. A big no no according to the security guard. Lots of laughs. Marjorie was a wonderful friend and I send my sincerest condolences to the family. Regards, Brenda Nash now in YYZ. - Posted by: Brenda Nash (Friend) on: Jun 26, 2019
