MAY NAWAL LUTFIYYA
August 22, 1956 - April 11, 2019
Nawal is survived by her sister Zana, her brother Jamil, sister-in-law Dana and extended family in the USA and the West Bank. She was predeceased by our parents, Abdulla and Billy Mae, and our brother, Sam. Nawal will be missed by us, and by many colleagues and friends across North America.
Born in Bangor Maine, Nawal travelled with her family, living in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan as well as the United States as a child. Our family moved to Winnipeg in 1969 where she completed high school and earned a BA at the University of Manitoba. She moved back to the USA to attend graduate school, earning a Master's degree at the University of Iowa and a PhD at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. In her peripatetic career, Nawal focused on chronic disease epidemiology and biostatistics, and subsequently worked at a number of universities and health organizations across North America as a senior research scientist. This included a two and one half year period with the WRHA in Winnipeg. She helped to author over 100 peer reviewed articles, most often with valued colleagues, on a range of health concerns, including asthma education, cardiovascular disease, obesity prevention, rural health issues, and inter-professional practice and education.
Nawal was a passionate woman who loved her family, her friends and their children. She had a generous spirit and she took great pleasure in selecting the right gifts for the people in her life and revelled in their enjoyment of those gifts. She cared deeply about our world, wanting it to be a fair and just place for us all.
A celebration of Nawal's life will be held on Friday, July 19, 1:00 p.m., at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. The burial will be private.
Flowers are gratefully declined, but if friends so choose, you may make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Nawal was my communications theory teacher at U of L in 1992. She was one of the hardest teachers I'd ever encountered. After turning in a paper that I was certain I'd done well on, she returned it with so many red marks and ungraded as she said it was unreadable. I thought her harsh and went to her after class. She offered a few hours of her time to help me and invited me for coffee. Her apartment in the Highlands was warm and zen like. Not at all what I was expecting. She generously went through the paper line by line, explaining my mistakes and offered to go through all my papers in the same manner as long as I turned them in early. I could turn them in as many times as I wanted and she would correct them until the due date and then the grade was the grade. That F turned into an A by the end of the semester. I now work in Hollywood, telling stories. I was just interviewed for a podcast and recounted this story and wanted to reach out to her and let her know what an impact she had on my life. I didn't realize she passed. Rest in peace Nawal and thank you for caring. - Posted by: Cheli Clayton (student) on: Jun 08, 2025

I had the privilege of knowing Nawal as a classmate at the University of Iowa. She was a delightful person whose presence spread sunshine wherever she went. Nawal was deeply engaged in the study of symbolic interactionism within the paradigmatic frames of the Iowa School of Symbolic Interactionism. Her sudden passing at an young age is a profound loss. My thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Vijayan K Pillai (Classmate) on: Sep 02, 2024

I just learned of Nawal's death and was shocked and saddened by the news. Nawal was a true force of nature: a woman of uncommon directness, intelligence, wit, and determination. She was also tremendously kind and a champion of the forgotten and the overlooked. I had hoped to see Nawal in Minneapolis in 2020 and regret that this reunion won't happen. I send my heartfelt condolences to her family, her colleagues, and her many friends throughout the world. - Posted by: Carolyn Anderson (friend from graduate school at the University of Massachusetts) on: Sep 11, 2019

Nawal always wanted everyone she encountered to achieve their full potential and worked hard to help others. She was kind and giving of her time and resources. Her direct approach to life and relationships meant that you did not have to guess how she felt or what she believed in. She was a very loyal friend and you could depend on her to follow though with whatever she set out to accomplish. When she was excited or happy about something her "I'm chuffed!" exclamation would make me smile. I am grateful for all the good times that we shared together over the past 7 years. Nawal, you touched many lives and created positive changes in each one. I celebrate your life! - And I miss and mourn the loss of your friendship. - Posted by: Catherine St. Hill (Friend) on: Jul 12, 2019
