HELGA BARTSCH

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Helga Bartsch, on June 23, 2019, at the age of 81.
Helga will be sadly missed by her husband of 61 years, Reinhard, and her daughters, Gabrielle and Martina (Sean), grandsons, Nicholas (Samantha) and Christian and her great-granddaughter Deja.
Helga was born in Halberstadt, Germany, on August 2, 1937. During her teenage years she swam competitively, took piano lessons and enjoyed outings to the theatre with her best friend Renate. It was on a girls' night out with Renate in early April of 1957 that she met the love of her life, Reinhard. Having just returned from Australia, tall, tanned and in a dark blue suit, he turned many a head including Mom's. After a few dates, Dad offered to help get Mom out of East Germany. Unable to tell anyone that she was leaving, Mom, at the tender age of 20, made the long journey to the West where she stayed with the Bartsch family. Less than 18 months later, Mom and Dad were married on August 23 in Preetz, Germany.
Shortly thereafter they immigrated to Canada and started a family; Gabrielle born in 1960 and Martina born in 1967. Mom and Dad enjoyed a good life together, building the family home in North Kildonan which was always filled with love and the sound of laughter. Although she came to Canada knowing only the Germany language, she not only mastered English, but put it to good use, working first at Old Dutch, then onto Eaton's, and from there to CKJS radio where she was the voice of both German news and commercials. Later on, she worked at Revenue Canada before joining the Worker's Compensation Board where she worked until she retired.
Hoping to enjoy her golden years with Dad, life threw the family a curve ball when Dad began showing signs of Alzheimer's. Despite the challenges that come with caring for someone with Alzheimer's, Mom's dedication and love for Dad never waned. The love and support of Gabrielle, Martina, Sean, Nicholas, Samantha and Christian bolstered her during difficult times. When her great-granddaughter Deja was born in 2017, Mom's life was complete. She never tired of hearing Deja stories, playing with her or sharing photos of beautiful great-granddaughter with her friends.

Mom know that you will be missed each and every day, but we will carry the love we have for you in our hearts, as well as the many memories we've created together.

Lastly, the family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital - from the aides to the many nurses and physicians who cared for our Mom during her time there.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, Manitoba.

  • Gabby and Martina you may not remember but we lived upstairs on Clifton St. So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. Many fun times with your Mom and Ray when we were all a lot younger. Please take care of your Dad and know they had a wonderful life. RIP Helga. - Posted by: Sharon Dudar (Friend) on: Nov 01, 2024

  • Dearest Gaby and Martina, I was so very saddened to hear of your Mom's untimely passing. She was a remarkable woman who lived with passion, drive, and style, and passed much of it on to you two. She did face inordinate challenges in the last few years, but was also blessed with one redeeming joy in that adorable great-granddaughter of hers. My, how she will be missed. Being in Ottawa, I regret not being able to attend Helga's Celebration of Life. From my family to yours, our deepest condolences. Much love, Allyson Domanski, Gary, Mirissa & Gabriel Kohlruss - Posted by: Allyson Domanski (Family friend) on: Jul 02, 2019

  • A childhood of laughter and good feelings. Feeling so blessed to have had Helga Bartsch play a significant role in my life. Even when my family moved across the country, the Christmas cards and phone calls kept us connected. I will so miss Tante Helga's laughter. I am so sorry not to be able to travel at this time to celebrate Tante Helga's beautiful life. On behalf of my parents, Rolf and Brigitte Kowalsky, and Geoff, Jeremy and Gillian Higgins, I wish Onkel Reinhard, Gaby, Martina and family all our love and best wishes for a wonderful celebration of life.
