GERALD LEONARD BENGER
Gerry was a wonderful husband, father, uncle, son and friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Corinne and Leonard Benger. Gerry will be cherished forever in the hearts of his wife Debbie; sons, Matthew (Caitlynn) and Andrew; mother-in-law Rita; sister and brother-in-law Monique and Bill; nephews, William, Alexander, Christopher; and brother-in-law Derek.
Gerry was born May 24, 1959 in Winnipeg. He grew up in St. James, attending Bruce Junior High, Silver Heights and the University of Winnipeg. Following university, he worked for the Province of Manitoba Geological Survey for 35 years where he made many lifelong friends. Gerry loved to play sports, he was an accomplished competitive swimmer from the time he was four years old, belonging to the St. James Seals and the Manitoba Masters Aquatic Club. He played water polo, hockey, and found great joy in pickle ball games in his later years. He inspired and influenced many as the coach of his sons' hockey and soccer teams. Gerry was an avid fan and loved watching and attending as many Jets and Bombers games as possible. He was a voracious reader and loved having discussions about books.
Gerry and the love of his life, Debbie, went on many adventures together, travelling to Europe, Orlando (he loved the theme parks), Disney Cruises and extended stays in Mexico following their retirement. Gerry would say the happiest place on earth was the family cottage at Laclu, Ontario. The cottage has been enjoyed by four generations. Summers were spent swimming, sailing, sitting by the campfire and card games with family and friends. Gerry adored his two sons, Matthew and Andrew, and daughter-in-law, Caitlynn (the daughter he always wanted).
Gerry will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his kindness, smile, generosity and quiet intelligence. Gerry was the rock of our family, he always went where he was needed.
A celebration of Gerry's life will be held on Friday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
Thank you to our family and friends for their overwhelming love and support during this difficult time. Life is precious, give a hug to a loved one.

We were both so very sorry to hear of Gerry's illness and passing. We were just getting to know the both of you. We could tell how much the two of you enjoyed being with each other (even on that day we ran in to you at the market when you were trying to talk him in to buying more gifts for the family Debbie). We will miss his smile and gentle nature. Please accept our deepest condolences to you and your family. Gerry was an extremely kind and generous person. I was so fortunate and blessed to work with him for over 26 years. Always so very smart, the first one to jump in whenever someone needed help, kind, loving, compassionate and simply the best friend anyone could be so fortunate to have. Forever in my heart, your spirit and special memories will stay with me forever, Thank you my friend for everything. Love Elaine - Posted by: Elaine Stevenson (Friend and Colleague) on: Jul 04, 2019
