CLIFFORD MERVIN MOXLEY
October 29, 1917- July 9, 2019
He was predeceased by his wife, Emma. Dad leaves to mourn his children, Susan (Bryan Cote), David (Anne) and Judi (Allan Barry), his precious grandchildren, Matthew and Colleen Cote (Rick Settee), Chris Moxley (Megan) and Nick Moxley, Anna (Corey McCarthy) and Evan (Donna Fontaine), and 10 wonderful great-grandchildren, Joshua Gasenzer, Sadie Moxley, Jameson Moxley, Christian, Avery and Madelaine McCarthy, Alexis, Xavier, Jaden deBeer, and Zack Barry, plus another great-grandchild due to arrive in December.
Dad was born in Rivers, the son of Roswell and Minerva Moxley. He attended school in Rivers until Grade 11 and in Portage la Prairie for his Grade 12. Dad moved to Winnipeg in 1937 to work at Salisbury House. In 1941, he joined the Army for 30 days, switched to the Navy for 30 days, and finally ended up in the Air Force. He was trained as an air gunner, and then a pilot. In 1942, he was deployed to England in a Spitfire Squadron, and became a flying officer. When the war ended, he returned to Winnipeg, and along with his father, Roswell, and his brother, Lloyd, opened Moxley's Rentals on Osborne Street. Dad was actively involved with running the business until 2009, when he semi-retired at the age of 92. The business is still there and is operated by his son David.
In 1946, Dad met Emma Erhardt, and in October of 1947, they were married. By 1953, they were a family of five. In 1955, the family of five moved into a new home that would be the home that Dad still lived in until a few months before he passed away.
In 1958, Dad contracted to have a cottage built on the South shore of Falcon Lake. Mom and the three kids spent every summer there from the last day of school to the day before school started in September. We all have lots of wonderful memories of those childhood summers.
In 1979, Dad had a pool installed in the backyard. All the grandchildren and great-grandchildren have learned to swim in that pool. Up until two years ago, Dad would dive in and have a swim every day the pool was open.
Dad played hockey in his youth, enjoyed curling, but his passion was golf. He played golf well into his 80s, won the 1952 Manitoba Open Amateur Golf Tournament, and when he couldn't play golf anymore watched all the great golf tournaments on TV. Some of Dad's other sports achievements include having a lifetime 5 pin bowling average of 244, missing a perfect game in 5 pin with a total score of 425, golfing his age twice, once on August 23, 1997 with a score of 79, and again on July 8, 2001 with a score of 83. In 1999, he was entered into the Manitoba Trap Shooting Hall of Honour. In 1955, his curling team won a car. And at the age of 80 years old, he bought a brand new Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic motorcycle, and rode it to and from the shop on Osborne Street.
Dad joined the Masonic Lodge in 1949, and became a Shriner in 1951 and immediately joined the Oriental Band. In 1958, he was one of the founding members of the Khartum Motor Patrol, in 1966 he was again a founding member of the Khartum Cycle Escort. In 1973, he was appointed to the Divan of Khartum Temple, and in 1981 he became Potentate of Khartum Temple.
The family would like to thank the staff on T4 and L6 at Deer Lodge Centre for their care and compassion. The family would also like to thank Veterans Affairs Canada for all the programs and support offered to our dad for the last several years. When I spoke to Veterans Affairs the other day, the last thing the representative said to me on the phone was, "We appreciate what he did for Canada".
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Khartum Shrine Centre, 1155 Wilkes Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in our dad's memory to the Khartum Shriner's Patient Transportation Fund, 1155 Wilkes Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3P 1B9.

In the 60's, my family had a cottage at Falcon Lake, on the same block as the Moxleys. Very nice family. Mr. Moxley had the coolest boat on the lake, and he would often take a bunch of random kids out for a ride. I was one of them occasionally, and I never forgot those rides, and I always thought he was a super guy. Reading the notice above, it looks like I was right. Quite a long and interesting life. My condolences to his family and friends on his passing. Tom Harrison Calgary, Alberta - Posted by: Tom Harrison (Old neighbour) on: Aug 03, 2019

What a long and remarkable life! I have good memories of Merv and the other Shriners on those impressive Harleys back when I was a young man in DeMolay. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. - Posted by: Colin Peterson (Long time acquaintance) on: Aug 03, 2019

I believe Merv grew up with my dad in Rivers. My dad also served in the Air Force and was stationed in England as a pilot and officer in WW2. Merle came to see my dad at our home in Westwood, driving his motorcycle. Very nice man. So sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Brenda Hedberg-McEachern (Acquaintance) on: Aug 03, 2019

I did not know Merv aside from an occasional visit to the rental store. I worked wit his daughter Susan (Cote). I believe I could see the positive effects his parenting had on her. Susan is a real go-getter and a doer who provided many "Round to its" for people she knew and interacted with. She is never one to just accept "why nots" but looked for " ways to" and would push through to complete challenges. I believe Merv was cut from the same cloth, and worked well past the usual retirement age. I am sure he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. - Posted by: Richard Hurd (Friend of his daughter Susan) on: Jul 19, 2019
