JESSIE VIOLET JOYCE

Jessie Violet Joyce (nee Bingham) of Winnipeg passed away at the age of 83 on July 28, 2019 at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg after a long illness surrounded by family.
Jessie was born in Summerside, PEI in 1936 to Fred and Thyra (Clark) Bingham. Jessie was married to Malcolm Joyce in Prince Edward Island, on September 13, 1958. She graduated from Mt. Allison University in 1957 where she met her future husband. Soon after their marriage, she accompanied her pilot husband, who was a member of 444 Sqn. flying F-86 fighters, to Baden-Baden, Germany. When on leave, they travelled the continent exploring Europe in all its beauty.
Two of her four children were born in Germany. The next posting was to Saint John, New Brunswick where she had her third child followed by a posting to Gimli, Manitoba, where her fourth child was born. After a posting to San Antonio, Texas our family moved to and settled in Winnipeg.
Jessie volunteered for many things including Manitoba Government House, and as the wife of a military Aide-de-camp, she organized and assisted with social engagements through four consecutive Lt. Governors. Jessie made many wonderful friends while volunteering at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. Also, some of her favourite activities were gathering with her beloved stitchery group and lunching with her Mermaid ladies. She and her husband adored the beautiful beaches and the red soil of their childhood home, Prince Edward Island. Her kindness and generosity were renowned. There was no child in the neighbourhood who would go hungry at lunch and scores enjoyed her delicious cookies made in her favourite yellow mixing bowl.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents and younger brother Kenneth Bingham. She leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Malcolm Joyce, son Michael (Linda) Joyce, daughter Karen (Martin) Ashton, son Robert (Sherry) Joyce, daughter Judy (Kurt) Zinkan, her brother Arthur (Deanna) Bingham, sister-in-law Vivianne (Michael) Iles, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and four nieces and nephews -including nephew Ron (Krystal) Bingham of PEI, of whom she became very close, and many beloved adopted PEI cousins. Jessie would love to have all that were touched by her to engage in an act of kindness towards someone be it family, friend, or stranger.
The family would like to thank the staff of Riverview for their kindness and professionalism.
In lieu of flowers, an act of kindness or a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7, would be welcome.
A celebration of Jessie's life will be held on August 2, 2019, 2:00 p.m., at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery).

  • Malcolm and family, so sorry to hear of Jessie's passing. Our sincerest condolences to all . She always had a welcoming smile and was a special lady in her volunteering and at squadron and Transport Canada events. Jessie and I would compare notes about Summerside and PEI trivia as being "Islanders". She will be missed by many. I'm sure you'll treasure the many memories with family and friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers to you as you remember a life well lived. - Posted by: Debbie and David Houston (friends from 402 Air reserve squadron/Transport Canada colleague ) on: Aug 01, 2019

I have a picture of all of us when I got transferred to Air Command Headquarters of me giving my fairwell speech at our Dinning in Night, and you as the Commanding Officer and Jessie and Jeananne at the head table. - Posted by: Ronald Salome (Friend) on: Jul 31, 2019

  • I remember as a little girl of six attending the wedding between my cousin Malcolm and his beautiful bride, Jessie, in Summerside, PEI. It is one of my strongest childhood memories. Jessie was like a movie star, so beautiful. Over the years we were together whenever Malcolm and Jessie came to the Island. It was always special. On one of their last trips to PEI Jessie came on one of our Thursday hikes. My sisters Carol Ann and Bea were with us along with my cousin Pat. We were hiking one of the trails in Cavendish and at one point Jessie and I were separated from the others. It was funny at first, but after some time went by we began to get concerned. It's impossible to get lost ,right? Eventually we found the others and all was well. I loved Jessie so very much. The world will not be the same without her and she will be missed. Love to Malcolm, Karen, Michael, Bob, Judy and their families. - Posted by: Kathleen & Ab Ferris (Family) on: Jul 31, 2019
